For years, Neanderthals have been portrayed as primitive, dim-witted cave dwellers who were outcompeted by modern humans. Popular culture often depicts them as brutish and unintelligent, but more recent scientific discoveries have painted a much more complex picture. As researchers continue to uncover new evidence, many long-held misconceptions about Neanderthals are being challenged. Far from being primitive, they were a successful human population that thrived across Europe and Asia for hundreds of thousands of years.
Myth #1: Unintelligent
One of the most widespread myths about Neanderthals is that they were unintelligent cavemen. When Neanderthals were first discovered, researchers often viewed them as primitive and less intelligent than modern humans, partly because of the shape of their skulls. Neanderthal skulls are more elongated, while modern human skulls are more rounded and globular. This difference led some early researchers to assume that Neanderthals were not as cognitively advanced as Homo sapiens.

While competition with modern humans may have played a role, most scientists now agree that Neanderthal decline was likely caused by multiple factors.
