A Forgotten Classic: Scott Walker — Scott 4

Scott Walker has to be one of the more interesting figures in music history. He started in the commercial pop scene, with the Walker Brothers. Later in his solo career he etched out a place for himself, and put his own spin on Baroque Pop. But by far the most interesting aspect of his career, is his experimental phase. The music he created then was harrowing, even spine-tingling. I’d say this record is the definitive statement in his Baroque Pop era.

The album beautifully starts off with “The Seventh Seal” which is actually a retelling of the classic movie. Scott casually shows off his storytelling ability, while the moody instrumental develops with backing vocals and orchestral arrangements. Leaving me with bittersweet feelings. The highpoint on this record is definitely, the contrast between Scott’s vocals and the lush instrumentation. Some songs border on melancholy, while others have a feeling of epicness about them. “Duchess” is particularly a sweet song, that conveys his longing for love. My favourite track would have to be “The Old Man’s Back Again”. Not only is it sonically amazing, with its grand chorus. But it’s also the strongest moment lyrically. Dedicated to the Neo-Stalinist regime, it critiques Brezhnev’s reign. Specifically it was written after the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact countries. That led to the resignation of Alexander Dubček, and the rolling back of policies that sought further democratisation and liberalisation in the country. Scott’s lines here are simple yet succinct. Really goes to show, that you don’t need the most extensive vocabulary. To touch on some of these issues, and do them justice.

“On Your Own Again“ is one of the more melancholic tracks. Tackling loneliness after a breakup. But in a hopeful way that makes you feel like everything will be okay. I also have to mention “Angels of Ashes” because it’s his strongest moment vocally. This album never loses its momentum. Seriously, it never falters. It’s also only 32 minutes long so it’s a perfect, short listen for unwinding. It’s one of those records, where you can choose to just vibe with the superb instrumentation and tone of Scott’s voice. While also not concentrating much on the lyrics. However it can prove to be quite a rewarding listen. If you pay attention to some of the stuff he’s saying. It will have you pondering political issues, failed romances and times of loneliness but always with an undertone of hopefulness.
