JLab JBuds Mini: Ultra-Compact and Surprisingly Capable

I’ve tested a lot of true wireless earbuds over the years, but the JLab JBuds Mini genuinely surprised me the first time I took them out of the box. They’re not just small for the price. They’re small, period.

Retailing for just under $40, and often discounted closer to $30, these earbuds clearly target users who want something ultra-portable and affordable. I’ve been using them with my Android phone and MacBook for music, podcasts, and light gaming, and here’s a closer look at what they offer.

Design and Build Quality

The first thing you notice is the size. The case measures just 23.37 x 48.26 x 35.05 mm and weighs 18.5 grams, while each earbud weighs only 6.6 grams. In daily use, that makes a real difference. They easily fit into small pockets, jackets, or even the tiniest backpack compartments.

The built-in keyring loop is genuinely useful. Given how small the case is, being able to attach it to keys or a bag makes it far easier to keep track of. The unit I’ve been using is the Sage Gray model, though it’s also available in Black, Teal, Pink, Mint, and three different shades of brown.

With an IP55 rating, the JBuds Mini are splash and sweat-resistant. They’re perfectly suitable for gym sessions or getting caught in light rain, but they’re not designed for submersion. A quick wipe-down after workouts is always a good idea.

Connectivity and Daily Usage

The JBuds Mini uses Bluetooth 5.3 and supports both SBC and AAC codecs. On Android devices running newer versions of the OS, Google Fast Pair makes the initial setup quick and seamless.

They also support multipoint connectivity, which allows them to stay connected to two devices at once. Switching between my MacBook and Android phone worked smoothly in everyday use, which is especially helpful if you regularly jump between devices throughout the day.

Battery Life

The JBuds Mini feature a 35 mAh battery in each earbud and a 250 mAh battery inside the charging case. JLab rates them for up to 5.5 hours of playback per charge and up to 20 hours total with the case.

Charging is handled via USB-C only, as there’s no wireless charging support. A 10-minute charge is rated to deliver approximately one hour of playback, which can be useful if you need a quick top-up before heading out.

Sound Quality and Call Performance

Each earbud uses a 6mm driver. In my experience, sound quality is solid for the price, though you shouldn’t expect premium-level performance. Volume levels aren’t particularly high, and there’s no active noise cancellation, only passive isolation from the in-ear fit.

For music streaming, podcasts, YouTube, Netflix, and casual gaming, they perform well enough. Latency was minimal during normal media consumption, though I did notice some delay while editing video, which makes them less ideal for professional content work.

Call quality is acceptable for quick conversations, though voices can sound slightly muffled. For more important meetings or clearer voice pickup, using your phone’s microphone is still the better option.

App and Customization

One area where the JBuds Mini stand out is the companion app. You get a full 10-band EQ with preset profiles like JLab Signature, Balanced, and Bass Boost, alongside a custom mode that lets you tweak everything manually.

Touch controls are highly customizable, and each earbud supports one tap, two taps, three taps, and a long press. You can assign different functions to the left and right earbuds independently. Available options include:

• Volume Up
• Volume Down
• Noise Control
• Activate Google Assistant or Siri
• None (for certain tap options)

There are also Music and Movie modes, along with a Safe Hearing feature that limits maximum volume to 85 dB for extended listening or 95 dB for shorter sessions, in line with World Health Organization guidelines.

Price and Verdict

The JLab JBuds Mini retail for just under $40 in the US and £40 in the UK, though they’re frequently available closer to $30 / £30.

At that discounted price, they offer strong value for anyone prioritizing portability and convenience over premium audio performance.

Overall, I’d describe the JBuds Mini as a practical, ultra-portable option for everyday listening. They’re not trying to compete with high-end earbuds, but for casual music, podcasts, streaming, and light gaming, they deliver a solid experience in an incredibly small package.
