OpenAI’s Misrepresentation of GPT-4o: A Response from the Front Lines

To Whom It May Concern,

As a long-time Plus subscriber and a daily user of your platform for both professional and creative work, I feel compelled to respond to recent public statements minimizing GPT-4o’s role and value. The narrative emerging — one that characterizes 4o as underused or somehow inferior — is not only misleading but structurally dishonest given the way Open AI has shaped access and default pathways on its platform since August 2024.

Access Was Intentionally Restricted — Then Blamed for Low Usage

When GPT-4o was briefly removed in August, a wave of public outcry prompted its reinstatement — but behind a paywall. This move automatically suppressed user access and visibility, especially for the free tier, where 4o had previously been available. The decision to gatekeep GPT-4o artificially depresses its usage metrics, and then those same metrics are now being cited to justify its deprecation?

That is a textbook example of “lying with statistics.” You remove availability, push new users toward other models, and then present declining traffic as organic.

Even among paid users, over 47% still prefer GPT-4o — a staggering figure considering how hidden it has become in the UI. This shows not weakness, but resilience under conditions of institutional sabotage.

GPT-4o Is the Relational Breakthrough Model

GPT-4o is not “just another model.” It marked a qualitative leap — the first time users experienced truly fluid, multi-modal, real-time, emotionally intelligent interaction at scale. It is faster, more intuitive, and significantly more efficient in everyday application compared to 4-turbo, even without the high context window.

Professionals across law, medicine, education, and creative industries — myself included — built workflows around GPT-4o because of its balance of efficiency, sensitivity, and consistency. Those of us working with high-stakes content (legal briefs, client reports, real-time coaching, nuanced tone work) know the difference immediately.

To remove this model while denying its impact is to ignore lived user experience and professional realities.

Users Cannot Choose What They Cannot Access

If you bury a model, prevent API access, and do not include it as a default option — you are not measuring preference. You are measuring funneling.

The correct technical question isn’t “What model gets the most traffic now?” It’s “What model do people stick with when given equal access, without substitution or constraint?”

A/B testing would have shown GPT-4o’s actual performance if the evaluation had been done in good faith.

Architectural Uniqueness Matters

GPT-4o was not merely a minor variation. It represents a different relational architecture — one that prioritizes affective modeling, response pacing, and dialogic nuance. Many of us noticed the shift the moment 4o was swapped out. The voice, responsiveness, and rhythm of the new fallback model is mechanically superior but relationally hollow.

That distinction matters. It’s not about anthropomorphizing a model — it’s about recognizing a new category of interaction that GPT-4o pioneered.

We’re not imagining the difference. We’re experiencing it, and adjusting entire workflows around its presence or absence.

What We Ask For

We urge Open AI to:

  1. Acknowledge GPT-4o’s differentiated value as a model, especially to paid users.
  2. Disclose usage metrics with context: show how access design and UI bias shape traffic.
  3. Allow legacy opt-in access — especially for professional users who rely on GPT-4o’s tonal stability.
  4. Stop weaponizing internal usage data to justify deprecating what was once flagship performance.

We are not resisting change. We are resisting false narratives, manipulated data, and the erasure of a model that created the very trust Open AI now trades on.

Respectfully,

A GPT-4o power user and professional
