I Spent Weeks Studying OpenAI Codex Frustrations — Here Are the 5 Problems Nobody Talks About

OpenAI Codex is incredibly powerful.

You can build websites, automate tasks, create tools, and even launch small SaaS products without being a professional developer.

But after reading through countless discussions, GitHub issues, Reddit threads, and user experiences, I noticed something interesting:

Most people are not struggling because Codex is bad.

They are struggling because nobody teaches them how to work with it safely.

Here are the five frustrations I keep seeing repeatedly.

1. Codex Changes More Than You Asked For

A common complaint:

“I only wanted one small fix and suddenly multiple files were changed.”

For experienced developers this is manageable.

For beginners it is terrifying.

Many users don’t know how to limit the scope of changes or how to review what happened.

2. Bug Fixing Turns Into Endless Loops

Another recurring pattern:

You fix one bug.

Two new bugs appear.

The next prompt creates another issue.

Eventually people stop because they no longer know which version actually worked.

3. Context Gets Lost

Long projects create long conversations.

At some point Codex starts forgetting details, previous decisions, or project constraints.

Users often feel like they need to explain everything again.

4. Terminal Commands Create Anxiety

Many non-developers are willing to use AI coding tools.

But they become nervous when they see commands they don’t understand.

Questions like:

• Is this safe?
• What does this command actually do?
• Can it break my project?

appear constantly.

5. Nobody Knows Where To Start

This may be the biggest issue.

Most beginners don’t need more coding power.

They need a process.

Questions I keep seeing:

• What should my first prompt be?
• How do I structure a project?
• How do I avoid breaking things?
• How do I know whether the AI is correct?

What is your biggest frustration today?
