A Simple Mid-Year Review That Can Restore Momentum
Take stock of what’s working and what isn’t

We are halfway through the year, which makes this a good time to pause and take stock.
Are you as far along as you thought you would be toward the goals, changes, and experiences you wanted for yourself this year?
If your answer is yes, take a moment to appreciate that.
If your answer is no, that’s okay too.
A mid-year check-in isn’t about judging yourself. It’s about assessing where you are and deciding what comes next.
One question worth asking is whether the goals you set at the beginning of the year still matter to you.
Sometimes a goal loses its appeal because you’ve changed. Sometimes life circumstances shift. Sometimes you discover that what you thought you wanted isn’t actually important to you anymore.
If that’s the case, give yourself permission to let it go or revisit it later. Just make a note somewhere so you can reconsider it when the time is right.
Before thinking about what still needs to be done, spend some time celebrating what you’ve already accomplished.
Write down your wins. Be thankful for the progress you’ve made. Put the list somewhere you’ll see it regularly. Seeing evidence of your progress can encourage you to keep moving toward the goals and experiences that still matter most.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by everything you still want to do this year, choose one goal or one experience and focus on that alone for a while.
Give it your attention. Enjoy building momentum. More importantly, enjoy the process.
I have to remind myself of this with writing.
I love writing, but I can easily become overwhelmed by all the ideas, projects, and possibilities.
One way I work through that feeling is by putting on relaxing sounds from YouTube, opening Word, and letting my mind wander. I pay attention to the act of typing because I genuinely enjoy it.
I start with bullet points and focus only on capturing the main ideas. Then I add simple labels such as:
- Topic:
- Takeaway for the reader:
Those small guidelines help me organize my thoughts and gradually shape them into a finished piece of writing.
The process becomes much more enjoyable when I stop worrying about the finished product and simply focus on the next step.
As you look at the second half of the year, remember that progress isn’t measured only by completed goals.
It’s also measured by lessons learned, habits built, and the decision to keep going.
Take stock. Celebrate what you’ve done. Adjust what needs adjusting.
Then keep moving forward.
If one of your goals is to read the Bible more consistently, my quick-start guide can help you choose a Bible and start reading with confidence.
