One of Nepal’s most revered Hindu shrines The statue, known as Budhanilkantha or Jalakshayan Narayan (“Vishnu reclining on water”), is about 5 meters long and carved from a single block of black stone. It rests in a pond and depicts Lord Vishnu reclining on the coils of the cosmic serpent Shesha.

One popular legend says that centuries ago, a farmer and his wife were plowing a field when their plow struck something hard. When they dug it out, blood is said to have flowed from the ground, and they discovered the sacred image of Vishnu. The site later became a temple.

Another famous tradition tells of a prophecy that a king of Nepal would die if he looked directly upon the deity. Because of this belief, Nepal’s monarchs traditionally avoided visiting the temple.

For devotees, the image symbolizes Vishnu sustaining the universe during the cosmic interval between creation cycles. Though He appears asleep, He is believed to be maintaining the cosmic order of existence.

Many visitors describe the atmosphere there as especially serene, with the dark stone deity floating in water beneath the open sky, surrounded by hills and prayerful devotees. 🙏🪷✨

According to Hindu mythology, after each cosmic cycle ends, Lord Vishnu rests upon the thousand-headed serpent Shesha in the infinite cosmic ocean called Kshira Sagara. While He appears asleep, this is not ordinary sleep. It represents a deep state of divine awareness between the destruction of one universe and the creation of the next.

From Vishnu’s navel emerges a lotus flower, and on that lotus sits Brahma. Brahma then creates the new universe. Vishnu’s consort Lakshmi is often shown near His feet, symbolizing devotion, prosperity, and harmony.
