Tony Robbins’ “Change your story, change your life.” is one of the most powerful things I have ever heard.
And for years, it did not work for me at all.
Not because Tony was wrong. He was not. But there is a catch nobody talks about. The harder I tried to live it, the more frustrated I became.
I want to tell you what that catch is. Because once I found it, everything changed.
What Happens When You Try to Change Your Story
When I first heard that quote, I got to work immediately.
I tried to reframe how I saw things. I worked on my self-talk. I pushed myself toward a more positive outlook and told myself a better story every morning.
And for a while, it felt like progress. Productive progress that made me feel good about myself.
But something kept pulling me back. The old thinking would return. The habits I was trying to break would creep back in. No matter how hard I worked on the new story, something underneath kept overwriting it.
Here is the question I could not answer: if I knew I needed to change my story, and I was genuinely trying, why was it not sticking?
I did not find the answer for a long time. I looked and tried so many different things. And the longer it took, the more I wondered if something was wrong with me rather than with the approach.
The Story You Cannot See
What I eventually understood was that I was trying to change the wrong story.
I was working on the easy ones I thought were real. The conscious story. “I am lazy and need more discipline.”
And I kept working on changing the stories of hurt like being made fun of because I was half Japanese. Or changing the story that I had the right to hide my feelings and be quiet because I had been adopted and I did not need to share what I was feeling with anyone.
But underneath those stories were older, deeper ones I had never examined. Stories I did not even know were there. The problem with hidden stories is that they are always more powerful than the ones you are consciously trying to build on top of them.
I was carrying a belief that I was not good enough, but I discovered that this was just my logical brain telling me I created that because I was bullied. It was only partly true.
It was tied to a deeper story that I did not really consider until much later in my life.
Another deeper story was that I had no real control over my fate. And another was that I needed someone to love me deeply and show it clearly, just to confirm I was necessary and that I mattered.
I had been carrying those beliefs since I was a child. Not because I had chosen them. But because I had absorbed them from experiences I had no control over.
They felt like facts.
That is why Tony’s words were not permanently sticking. I could not paint over the stories that I did not even know existed.
This is exactly what I write about every week — finding the stories running underneath the behavior, and how to dissolve them for good. Please follow me for similar stories.
Where The Stories Actually Came From
I was adopted when I was 2 years old. Before I was old enough to understand what that meant, my young brain drew a conclusion that would follow me for decades. That things get taken away. That security is temporary. That I had no real control over what happened to me. And on top of that, the story I wrote was that I needed to be deeply wanted by someone so I could have real proof I was worth something.
Those conclusions made complete sense to the boy who made them. He was protecting himself the only way he knew how.
But I was not him anymore. And his conclusions were not facts. They were just something I had carried so long they had started to feel like ones.
What Finally Changed
The shift did not come from trying harder to think differently.
It came from finding the stories I had never looked at directly.
When I finally saw them clearly, not just intellectually but really saw them, something moved that no amount of positive self-talk had ever touched. I could see that the belief I was not good enough was not a fact about me. It was a conclusion drawn by a younger version of me from experiences that little boy had no power over.
And I did not have to keep living inside it.
As Peter Crone says, “What happened, happened, and could not have happened any other way.”
The adoption. The bullying. The years of carrying stories I did not choose. Fighting that reality or wishing it had been different was not healing. It was just more weight on top of the original wound.
Accepting the past completely, not as something that defined me but as something that had simply happened, was what finally allowed me to put it down.
And when I put it down, Tony’s words landed for the first time.
Change your story, change your life.
But you have to find the real story first.
Where You Actually Start
If you have tried to change your story and kept sliding back, you are probably not doing anything wrong.
You are working on the visible story while the hidden one keeps running underneath.
The starting point is not positive thinking. It is not better self-talk. It is a question most people never stop to ask honestly:
What do I believe about myself that I have never actually questioned? Where did that belief come from? And is it really true, or just something I absorbed so long ago that it stopped feeling like a belief and started feeling like a fact?
That question is where Tony’s advice actually begins.
If you find and let go of those hidden stories, your life will change. Not gradually. Permanently.
If you want help finding the stories running underneath your life, every week I write about exactly this. Please follow me. It is free and it will not waste your time.
