What’s Expected of Me?

From Junior to Senior: what each step of my journey taught me.

Now that you know what UX Writing is, how it differs from other forms of digital writing, and the main responsibilities required of a UX Writer at any level of seniority, it’s time to ask: okay, but in practice, what’s expected of me?

The responsibilities of a UX Writer change, grow, and evolve as the professional gains experience in the field, just like in any other profession. And often, it’s difficult to understand or even define what you can and know how to do based solely on job descriptions from LinkedIn — which sometimes ask for 5 years of experience for an intern role…

Based on my journey — again: solely on my journey — I’ve gained some insights into what was expected of me based on demands, logistics, and even the deliverables I completed. Today, I understand that a Junior role, for example, focuses mainly on creating copy with guidance from more experienced professionals, an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of how to assess user needs and even learn best practices in writing for interfaces.

Meanwhile, at an intermediate level, the responsibilities include a bit more autonomy and active collaboration. Interacting with designers and developers involved in the same projects starts to become routine. Consequently, you start getting involved in creating more complex user flows, usability testing, refining language, and ensuring cohesive communication. This is very close to what a Senior does, with the addition that the Senior has much more autonomy, responsibility, and the need to make writing decisions based on data. I dare say that as a Senior, a significant part of your day is defending your choices and showcasing their results.

And it becomes even more complex when a UX Writer takes on the role of a specialist, a more strategic professional within product teams.

As a guide for you, here’s a consideration of the responsibilities and competencies I found essential at each level I’ve worked (and hope to work):

Junior UX Writer

Responsibilities:

  • Microcopy Writing: Craft clear and concise text for buttons, menus, error messages, and instructions.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with designers, developers, and other UX team members to ensure consistency and clarity in content.
  • Basic User Research: Participate in analyzing user research to understand user needs and behaviors under the supervision of more experienced professionals.
  • Review and Editing: Review and edit existing content to improve clarity and consistency.

Essential Skills:

  • Writing Skills: Ability to write clearly, concisely, and appropriately for the target audience.
  • Basic UX Knowledge: Understanding of basic user-centered design and user experience principles.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Good communication skills and the ability to work in a team.
  • Attention to Detail: Careful in reviewing text and applying style guidelines.

Mid-Level UX Writer

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Content Development: Create and implement content strategies for specific projects.
  • Content Style Guide: Contribute to the development and maintenance of style guides and writing standards.
  • Content Research and Testing: Conduct user research and A/B testing to validate the effectiveness of texts.
  • Mentorship and Support: Guide and support junior UX Writers by reviewing their work and providing feedback.

Essential Skills:

  • Content Strategy: Ability to develop and implement content strategies aligned with project objectives.
  • Advanced UX Knowledge: Deep understanding of UX principles and how content impacts the user experience.
  • Research and Analysis: Skill in conducting research and analyzing data to inform content decisions.
  • Adaptability: Ability to quickly adjust content based on feedback and project changes.

Senior UX Writer

Responsibilities:

  • Content Leadership: Lead the creation of content for large projects or products.
  • Communication Strategy: Develop and lead communication strategies for user experience.
  • Team Coordination: Coordinate with product, marketing, design, and development teams to ensure an integrated experience.
  • Standard Setting: Establish and maintain high standards of quality and consistency in content.

Essential Skills:

  • Leadership and Project Management: Ability to lead complex projects and manage teams.
  • Strategic Vision: Broad vision on how content fits into the overall product and company strategy.
  • Research Expertise: Expertise in user research methods and data analysis.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and negotiation skills to align teams and stakeholders.

Specialist UX Writer

Responsibilities:

  • Holistic Vision: Develop and implement a holistic content vision across the organization.
  • Content Innovation: Innovate and implement best practices and emerging trends in UX Writing.
  • Mentorship and Training: Train and develop other UX Writers and related teams.
  • External Representation: Represent the company (and yourself) at conferences, workshops, and industry events on UX Writing.

Essential Skills:

  • Innovation and Thought Leadership: Be a thought leader in the field, influencing industry trends and practices.
  • Broad Strategic Vision: Ability to align content strategies with long-term business objectives.
  • Influence and Persuasion: Strong ability to influence and persuade high-level stakeholders.
  • Proven Experience: Extensive proven experience in large UX Writing projects.

Obviously, none of this is a rule. I myself am a Senior at my current company, and my deliverables include style and voice guidelines for products, mentoring junior writers, and working daily with product managers and design leaders to ensure the user experience is consistent and aligned with business goals.

Is this good? Is it bad? Time will tell. I see every opportunity as just that: an opportunity. Each company will ask for a bit more or a bit less from the UX Writer role. But one thing is certain: at all levels, a UX Writer must have a deep commitment to continuously improving the user experience through content.
