Why Does a Feasibility Study Matter Before Starting a New Product Development Project?

A new product often begins with an attractive idea: the customer needs it, engineering believes it can be designed, and management sees a market opportunity. The natural reaction is to start designing.

That is exactly where expensive mistakes can begin.

A product being technically possible does not automatically make it commercially, operationally, or financially feasible.

Consider an automotive component proposed for localization. The design team may successfully develop the geometry and material specification. But what happens if the required manufacturing tolerance cannot be maintained consistently? What if tooling investment is ₹40 lakh while expected annual volume is too low to recover it? What if the selected material has a 16 week procurement lead time? Or the product passes functional testing but fails regulatory requirements?

None of these are purely design failures. They are feasibility failures that should have been identified before development accelerated.

This is why a feasibility study should function as an early decision gate in New Product Development.

Before committing significant engineering hours, tooling, prototypes, suppliers, and capital, the team should establish whether the product makes sense across interconnected dimensions: technical capability, manufacturing readiness, supply-chain availability, investment requirement, expected volume, regulatory compliance, development timeline, and commercial viability.

The important question is therefore not simply:

“Can we manufacture this product?”

It is:

“Can we manufacture it repeatedly, at the required quality, within the target cost, at the required volume, within the available timeline — and still create a viable business?”

A strong feasibility study may recommend proceeding. It may force the concept to change. Sometimes, its greatest value is recommending that the project should not start at all.

Stopping a weak project before tooling is cheaper than discovering its weaknesses after SOP.

In NPD, feasibility is not documentation before engineering begins.

It is the first serious engineering and business decision about whether the idea deserves to become a product.
