Temperatures are hitting record highs. We have crossed a key climate line. Just a few countries are causing most of the damage. Meanwhile, we’re quickly running out of time to fix it.
While suffering through previous year heatwaves, which already felt like standing under burning sun. This year heatwaves has been drastically increased. And with each passing year, they are on the verge to explode. Especially in India, stepping outside after 10 P.M and then getting slapped by harsher winds, ruins the day.
Especially, after reaching to university lecture hall, my brain doesn’t function properly. I even wonder and lurks without even knowing what to do. Apart from heatwaves, pollution adds more problems.
But in major Indian news and broadcasting channels, there is hardly much talk, debates on climate, even leave the solutions aside. And mostly, whoever is not climate denialist, place climate change as an outside issue. But actually roots are within human mind. It’s not at ease. Even mind is a tool for ego. Which is itself incomplete and suffering.
The summer of 2026 turned catastrophic without any warning.
By the end of June, France experienced its hottest day on record since 1947. Pissos saw temperatures soar to 44.3°C. The French health authorities reported over a thousand more deaths than usual for that period, and ambulance services were swamped with more than 122,000 calls during the peak of this heatwave. Meanwhile, similar scenarios unfolded across Europe but with slight variations in figures and locations. Countries like Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain, and the United Kingdom all broke temperature records.
In Belgium specifically, there was a sharp increase in mortality rates between June 18 and 29 by 39 percent. More than 1,200 extra deaths have been reported. Slovenia saw temperatures in June break records that hadn’t been touched since 2022. Meanwhile, in the UK, East Surrey Hospital faced a critical incident because of rising demand and had to limit services to only life-threatening emergencies.
Despite how severe June 2026 was for Europe, this didn’t shock many. Scientists had warned about this for years. The difference now? These aren’t predictions anymore; they’re making headlines.

The Numbers That Should Stop You Mid-Scroll
Let’s dive into the current global events, because they often extend beyond a single news cycle.
Back in January 2026, Australia experienced an unprecedented heat dome affecting areas like Victoria, South Australia, and New South Wales with temperatures soaring to around 49°C. Meanwhile, Argentina faced a simultaneous heat wave that put livestock and crops at risk as the mercury rose to 40°C. Fast forward to March 2026, parts of the southwestern and central United States also endured extreme heat conditions. By late June that year, the National Weather Service warned nearly half of the U.S. population — 180 million people — about facing “major” or “extreme” heat risks.
These incidents aren’t isolated; they form a pattern.
From 2000 to 2019, approximately… Each year, 489,000 people around the world die from heat-related causes. Asia accounts for 45% of these deaths, while Europe sees 36%. In just Europe, heat was responsible for over 60,000 deaths in 2022 and another 47,500 in 2023. Without any changes to how we handle this issue, the number could reach 120,000 deaths annually by 2050 in Europe alone.
Meanwhile, extreme heat has become the leading cause of weather-related fatalities in the United States. It takes more lives than hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods combined each year. The annual death toll from heat rose sharply from 1,069 in 1999 to an expected 2,394 by 2024. This rise coincides with a lengthening of the average heat wave season by about 46 days since the ’60s.
There’s no question where we’re headed with this trend.

This Isn’t Just “Hot Weather.” Climate Change Is the Architect.
This tale is sometimes spun as a weather story, but that’s not quite right. It’s really about climate.
Scientists from Sweden, Denmark, the U.S., the Netherlands, Ireland, and the UK have shown that a similar June heatwave would have been cooler by about 3.5°C during the day in 1976 and around 2°C in 2003. The same weather patterns now lead to hotter temperatures than they did in the mid-1900s because our climate baseline has warmed up.
Simply put: weather stays constant, but the ground beneath it has shifted. What used to be an unusual summer is now what we consider normal. These days, records seem to be broken every year.
Scientists discovered that about 68% of deaths due to heat in Europe during the summer heatwaves of 2025 were a direct result of human-induced global warming.
Let that sink in for a moment. Two out of every three people who died from the heat back then might still be alive if climate change wasn’t a factor. This isn’t some far-off, theoretical issue — it’s a real and immediate problem with tangible consequences.
1.5°C: The Line We Were Told Not to Cross — and Did
Back in 2015, nations across the globe committed to the Paris Agreement. They pledged to keep global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times.
Although the agreement didn’t have strict enforcement mechanisms, it carried a strong moral obligation. Scientists warned that exceeding 1.5°C would trigger climate feedback loops — uncontrollable warming chains that policies or technologies couldn’t stop.
We’ve now surpassed that crucial limit.
In 2024, Earth experienced its hottest year since records began 175 years ago, with temperatures averaging 1.55°C above those recorded between 1850 and 1900. This marked the first time annual temperatures exceeded the critical threshold of 1.5°C on average.
Out of the last 19 months, 18 saw higher-than-normal temperatures, emphasizing the urgency of addressing climate change impacts promptly and effectively. The world hit the 1.5°C mark, and by January 2025, temperatures soared to an unusual 1.75°C above pre-industrial levels.
The Paris Agreement’s target actually considers a long-term average over 20 to 30 years, so technically, that hasn’t been surpassed yet. However, climate science professor Richard Allen from the University of Reading emphasizes that crossing the 1.5-degree limit seems inevitable. He insists on urgently reducing greenhouse gas emissions to steer clear of the more perilous 2-degree increase.
Meanwhile, James Hansen, the renowned climatologist who first alerted the US Congress about climate change back in 1988, has delivered even graver warnings about our situation. He said the 1.5°C target is “deader than a doornail.”
Human-caused warming has been rising at an unprecedented rate of 0.27°C per decade from 2015 to 2024. If emissions remain steady, the world will hit an average warming of 1.5°C in about five years.
So, what happens after crossing that threshold? Feedback loops kick in. Arctic permafrost melts, releasing methane, which leads to more warming and further melting. Coral reef bleaching reduces the ocean’s ability to absorb carbon. When ice disappears, it reflects less sunlight, causing oceans to heat up more.
These factors amplify each other and were expected to stay inactive below 1.5°C; they were never meant to be issues we had to tackle but rather ones we aimed to avoid altogether.

The Accused: Who Is Actually Responsible?
Every nation contributes to emissions, yet the spread is incredibly uneven. When discussing “global” responsibility, it’s crucial to pinpoint which countries are causing the most harm.
The 2025 EDGAR report highlights that in 2024, global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions hit 53.2 gigatons of CO₂ equivalent, a rise of 1.3% from the previous year. China, the United States, India, the EU27, Russia, and Indonesia emerged as the top GHG emitters in 2024. Together, these countries were responsible for 61.8% of worldwide emissions.
China stands out as the largest emitter by volume, contributing roughly 29.2% of global GHG emissions in that year with a total of 15,536 megatons of CO₂ equivalent. Since 1990, China’s emissions have increased over threefold due to rapid industrial growth and urbanization. The process of industrialization and urbanization heavily relies on coal.
United States contributes about 11% to the global emission tally. Although the country’s overall emissions have dropped since 2005, Americans still rank high in terms of emissions per person, averaging 17.3 tonnes each in 2024. This is due to their reliance on carbon-heavy power systems, extensive transportation networks, and high consumption levels.
On the other hand, India ranks third with 8.22% of global emissions and has experienced the most considerable growth among major emitters in 2024. Despite this increase, India’s per capita emissions are significantly lower than those in the US, but the growth is noticeable nonetheless.
Russia also finds itself among the top five emitters, with a per capita emission rate of 18.02 tons — one of the highest globally — largely due to its role as a leading fossil fuel producer.
When it comes to per-capita emissions, Saudi Arabia and Australia stand out. Saudi Arabia emits 22.8 tons per person, while Australia is close behind at 22.3 tonnes, making them the highest in the world. This situation presents a real moral dilemma.
Countries like India point out, quite rightly, that they have contributed very little historically but now suffer the most from climate change impacts.
Meanwhile, the United States and European nations benefited from industrialization fueled by over 200 years of largely unchecked emissions. The burden of historical emissions isn’t shared equally among nations. Yet, atmospheric chemistry doesn’t factor in past fairness or injustices; it just reacts to current conditions.

Operation 2030: The Deadline That Is Already Here
In May 2025, Acharya Prashant, a Vedantic teacher and environmental advocate, launched “Operation 2030.” He explained during an interview that back in 2015, a target was set to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2030.
This goal requires reducing global carbon emissions by 43% from what they were in 2019. Even achieving this reduction only aims to cap the rise at 1.5 degrees. The term “Operation” highlights the urgency of the situation; it’s more like an emergency plan rather than a casual approach.
Let’s have a chat about policy. It’s time for folks who’ve been relaxed, thinking climate change is something only their grandchildren will deal with, to wake up. Now, you might be wondering why this ‘Operation 2030’ is necessary.
Here’s the thing: we’re already in 2025, and that critical 1.5-degree limit has been crossed. We always said we wanted to keep global warming below that level, even far into the future. Otherwise, we’d trigger something irreversible — and guess what? That’s already happening this year.
Operation 2030 isn’t some government scheme or corporate promise. It aligns more closely with what climate activists have been demanding all along.
For many years, efforts have aimed at making climate change feel real and understandable for everyone. Instead of just throwing numbers around, the goal is to provide a clear message that inspires action on an ordinary Tuesday morning.
Acharya Prashant argues that simply sharing facts isn’t enough to shift behavior on a large scale. Real change happens when people grasp what’s truly at stake — not just in theory but deep down inside.
Recently, heatwaves have helped cement this understanding as people experienced them firsthand. The real question remains: will these feelings linger once the weather shifts?
I’ve seen that presenting facts alone doesn’t significantly chang much within. Seeing, presenting facts can happen from outside, but without intent, even facts became another tool. One can be factual but still go through same route. Suppose I’m from top 1% elite lobby, or even as a usual heavy consumer, someone can show facts or while scrolling, facts can be there, but I can still remain very same person.
Superficially, I can admire facts, praise them while internally being the same and continuing through that usual route. I’m vegan, but I know that producing vegan food has its own emission, it’s not green. Still, it has far less emissions that that of dairy.
What 43% Actually Means — And Why 2030 Is Right Now
To keep global warming below 1.5°C, we need to slash greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 50% by 2030, using 2019 as our starting point.
The World Meteorological Organization says there’s an 80% likelihood that at least one of the upcoming five years will outdo 2024 as the warmest year recorded.
And with just four years until 2030, that’s not much time.
In real-world terms, this means cutting down 43% of today’s global emissions. This involves shutting down coal plants, stopping unnecessary flights, making transportation electric, changing how we use land and grow food, and halting new fossil fuel projects — all by relying on a baseline that reached its peak in 2024. It’s a big task for just four years.
Disasters led to an unprecedented 45.8 million internal displacements, with a staggering 99.5% resulting from weather-related hazards like floods, storms, wildfires, and droughts. Current climate pledges are falling disastrously short of what’s needed.
Under the Paris Agreement, these pledges address only about one-third of the emissions cuts required to keep global temperatures under 2°C, let alone 1.5°C.
This isn’t about being pessimistic; it’s basic math.
Yet here’s another side of that math: taking decisive action on climate could bring at least $26 trillion in economic benefits by 2030. The energy sector alone promises around 18 million new jobs centered on sustainable energy initiatives. For years now, the notion that we must choose between safeguarding our climate and boosting our economy has been a misleading one.
What You Do With Information This Large
Imagine a scenario where you end up feeling stuck because the issues seem so massive. The sheer scale of the numbers, the clout of those in charge, and how little time there is can make any personal effort appear pointless. Like, why bother composting when China keeps adding more coal plants? Or why switch up your diet if the US has already ditched the Paris Agreement?
These feelings aren’t off-base; they make sense given such an overwhelming challenge.
However, let’s not forget: people make up systems. Every significant change in history — whether ending slavery or introducing indoor plumbing and seat belts — occurred because enough folks saw a gap between reality and what ought to be, and chose to act. It’s not okay anymore. They made that clear, speaking up loudly and in many ways. Eventually, institutions had no choice but to act.
Heatwaves don’t wait for debates to end. In June 2026, France experienced 44.3°C, a temperature expected only by 2030. We reached it sooner than predicted. The planet’s suffering isn’t due to lack of warnings; it’s because the responses fell short. Operation 2030 urges us all to stop ignoring this as somebody else’s issue.
For most of us, this article would become just another presentation of facts. Again, seeing is easy, reports from doctors, academic performance, the quality of daily life, spending time on petty things, watching influencers that has very high carbon footprints, scrolling worthless reels; all of this can be put in front of you but remaining the same is a choice.
Until one doesn’t examine the chooser and make the right choice, real change doesn’t happen. Climate change and ongoing heatwaves are just tiny branches apart from other problems which has its root — Self-ignorance. Without lifelong self-evaluation, everything one use for inner fulfillment leads to suffering and more incompleteness.
Outer change can be superficial while remaining that same self. The question is unsettling and uncomfortable -rather than asking ‘can we get rid of heatwaves?’ one must ask, ‘Am I the one getting influenced from society, conditioning, and unnecessary bodily compulsions and consuming more and more without even looking within and asking honest questions’
