Filing a patent as a 20-year-old engineering student in India — what it actually looks like

When people hear the word “patent,” they usually imagine large companies, research labs, or experienced professionals working on high-end innovations.

As a 20-year-old engineering student in India, I never thought I would become part of the patent filing process so early in my career.

Most students around me were focused on exams, internships, coding rounds, and placements. Patents always felt like something reserved for researchers or startup founders.

But while working on IoT, Embedded Systems, and Edge AI projects, I slowly realized that innovation can start from simple real-world problems.

This is what filing a student patent in India actually looked like from my experience.

How the Idea Started

The idea developed during work on an IoT and blockchain-based smart basket system designed for agricultural supply chain tracking.

While researching farm-to-market logistics systems, I noticed several major issues:

Many students assume patents are only for senior researchers or large companies.

But in reality, college is one of the best environments for experimentation and innovation.

Students already have:

  • curiosity
  • access to learning resources
  • flexibility to test ideas
  • freedom to explore technology

Even if a project does not become a commercial product immediately, the learning experience itself is extremely valuable.

For me, filing a patent was not just an academic milestone.

It became proof that engineering students in India can contribute to innovation much earlier than most people expect.

Final Thoughts

At 20, I am still learning every day.

But this experience taught me that students should take their ideas more seriously.

Innovation does not always begin inside large companies or research laboratories.

Sometimes it starts with a college project, curiosity, and the willingness to keep improving an idea step by step.
