Why I Stopped Copying Traders on eToro

Copy trading sounds simple. Pick a profitable trader, allocate funds, sit back. eToro makes it look effortless: the Popular Investor program has thousands of traders to choose from, full performance history, full transparency.
Here’s what the dashboard doesn’t show.
When you copy someone trading EUR/USD on eToro, you’re paying a 1-pip spread on every entry. Your copied trader might operate on tighter pricing elsewhere, but your copy gets routed through eToro’s own markup. Over 50 trades a month, that’s real money leaving your account before a single position closes.
Then there’s currency conversion. eToro accounts are USD-denominated. Deposit in euros, pounds, or anything else and you pay a 1.5% conversion fee upfront. On a ,000 deposit, that’s 5 gone before day one.
The $5 withdrawal fee feels trivial until you’re taking profits monthly. That’s $60 a year just to access your own money.
I’m not saying eToro is bad. FCA and CySEC regulated, publicly traded company, legitimate operation. For beginners wanting stock market exposure without leverage, it works fine.
The Popular Investor program pays top traders a management fee based on assets under copy. Their goal is growing AUM, not maximizing your returns. A 5% drawdown hurts you. For them, it’s just volatility in their metrics.
But copy trading as a passive income strategy? That framing carries more weight than it can support.
The traders you copy are optimizing for their own performance metrics and Popular Investor tier earnings. Their incentives aren’t perfectly aligned with yours. When they take a drawdown, you take the same hit — plus conversion fees and spread markup baked in at entry.
What’s actually left in your account after platform costs, conversion fees, and spread markup on every trade?
That’s the number worth asking about.
