Bell’s Palsy or Stroke? The Facial Droop That Can Fool Anyone

What is Bell’s Palsy?

*Bell’s Palsy is sudden weakness or paralysis of facial muscles on one side. It affects cranial nerve VII (facial nerve)

*Annual incidence: 15–30 per 100,000; higher in winter

*Lifetime risk: ~1 in 65 people

*One-sided droop in eye, mouth and brow, Difficulty in swallowing, accumulation of saliva on one side, paralysis of facial muscles on one side.

Anatomy of Facial Nerve

*Branches: Temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, cervical.

*Origin: Pons (brainstem); exits via stylomastoid foramen

*Functions: Facial expression, taste (anterior tongue), tear/saliva

production, ear sensation.

Symptoms

*Facial droop: Inability to close eye, smile asymmetrically, wrinkle

forehead

*Other: Dry eye/mouth, taste loss, hyperacusis, ear pain.

*Onset: Hours to days; forehead sparing suggests stroke.

What is Stroke?

*A stroke, also called a brain attack or cerebrovascular accident (CVA), happens when the brain does not receive enough blood and oxygen.

*This can occur in two main ways: an ischemic stroke and a hemorrhagic stroke.

Symptoms

*Sudden weakness or paralysis on one side of the body (face, arm, or leg)

*Facial droop — one side of the mouth may sag when smiling

*Slurred speech or difficulty understanding language

*Vision problems — sudden blurred, double, or lost vision

*Loss of balance or coordination, dizziness, or staggering gait

*Severe headache (especially with vomiting or altered consciousness)

*Confusion, seizures, or coma

Before coming to a conclusion, one should always consult a physician and look at all the signs and symptoms before predicting if it is a Stroke or Bell’s Palsy.
