Pick of the Week: “You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty” by Akwaeke Emezi. A Romance That Refuses to Behave.

Every week, HootPerch picks one book that deserves to be talked about more. This week, it is the novel where one of the most acclaimed literary voices of the last decade walked into the romance genre, refused every rule, and came out with a book readers still cannot agree on. And that disagreement is exactly why we chose it.

Feyi Adekola wants to learn how to be alive again.

Five years before the novel opens, Feyi survived the car accident that killed her husband, Jonah. She walked away. He did not. That survival, and the guilt that comes with it, is the wound the whole book is built around. When we meet her, she has rebuilt a version of a life: an artist with her own studio, a Brooklyn brownstone shared with her best friend Joy, and, finally, the beginnings of a willingness to want things again.

The novel opens with a rooftop encounter, sensual and a little reckless, that Feyi does not expect to mean much. It does not, exactly. But it sets off a summer that spirals far beyond it. A man named Nasir wants something real with her. He invites her to a tropical island to meet his father, a celebrity chef named Alim. At the same time, a curator offers Feyi the opportunity that could finally launch her art career. Everything is arranging itself into the shape of a good life.

And then Feyi meets Alim, and the good life develops a fault line.

This is Akwaeke Emezi’s first romance novel, their seventh book overall, and it is unmistakably theirs. Emezi built their reputation on speculative and literary fiction. Freshwater. The Death of Vivek Oji. Pet. Books that treat the boundary between the self and the sacred as porous, that write grief and embodiment with a rawness few writers attempt. Bringing that sensibility into romance produces something the genre rarely sees: a love story that is also a study of grief, desirability, and the cost of choosing joy.

Emezi has said they did not want the book to fall into the standard tropes, and it shows. There is a queer gaze running through it. There is a friendship at its centre, Feyi and Joy, that is as compelling as any of the romances, sometimes more so. There is food, described with such devotion that meals become emotional events: ceviche as a symbol for grief, a grilled cheese as an act of love. And there is a central relationship built on a genuinely uncomfortable premise, one the book does not apologise for.

That is where readers divide, and they divide sharply. Some call it one of the boldest, most unabashedly romantic novels they have read in years. Others cannot get past the choices Feyi makes or the triangle at the story’s heart. BuzzFeed landed firmly in the first camp, praising how Emezi slays a genre new to them, with tenderhearted characters and an immaculate balance of realistic dialogue and lyrical prose. Vogue called it gripping from page one. Grazia called it raunchy, sad and uplifting. Plenty of readers, meanwhile, would tell you it was not for them at all.

This one asks something of you. It wants you to sit with discomfort, to hold sympathy for a character making difficult choices, to let grief and desire share the same page without resolving neatly. Emezi was born in Umuahia and raised in Aba, Nigeria. They are a New York Times bestselling author, a National Book Award finalist, and were named a Next Generation Leader by Time in 2021. This novel became a Top Five Sunday Times bestseller and one of the most anticipated releases of its year. Amazon Studios and Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society won the screen rights in a competitive seven-figure auction, with Emezi attached as executive producer. The adaptation is still in development.

Here is why it makes such a strong HootPerch challenge book. So much of what matters in this novel happens beneath the surface, in the shift of Feyi’s interior weather, in what a meal is standing in for, in the difference between what characters say and what they mean. A reader who moves through it on plot alone will reach the ending with one experience. A reader who tracks the emotional architecture will reach a completely different one. The comprehension challenge is where that difference shows up.

Read it. Then argue with someone about it. That is the highest compliment this book can be paid.
