Picking The Perfect Fastener

While there are many elements that play a key role in construction and maintenance projects, **fasteners** can’t be overlooked. They play an important role in binding materials together, playing a critical part in the project. The choice of fasteners for a project is critical. If you choose the right type of fasteners for the project, consider it successful, otherwise, you may end up ruining the whole project and start from scratch again. You need to consider the type and scope of the project carefully and how important is the role of the fastener in it. Once you are done with that, figure out which type of fastener will work best in your project before starting your work. You can also consult with the experts to get their advice regarding the selection of fasteners. There are a variety of fasteners available in the market. These fasteners are discussed in detail below:

Screws:

Screws are cylindrical in shape and totally threaded except their head. Screws work well in holding material pieces together. Screws are driven using rotation with a manual or automatic screwdriver. Threads of screw hold and pull the material pieces together when gripped. When a screw reaches the proper depth its head stops rotating. Screws can be easily removed and they don’t get loose on their own. Screws come in a variety of sizes and styles. You can’t hide the head of a screw easily and it is often visible. Screws also rip and tear the materials especially wood and plastics sometimes.

Nails:

Nails are made of steel and have spiked ends. They are driven into a variety of materials using a hammer or a nail gun. They are often used to hold the wood or attach anything securely to the wood. A tool with explosive charge can be used while nailing into the concrete. Nails are pretty easy to install and if you are using an air gun for this purpose the task will become even easier. Nails are inexpensive as compared to other types of fasteners and can be countersunk into trim materials as well. However, it should be noted that they get loose sometimes and may split materials. They can also damage the materials if your hammer misses slightly so you need to be really careful while working with the nails in a project.

Nuts and Bolts:

Both these things work together to hold the materials, bolts are threaded and placed in the drilled holes through two or more materials, then a threaded nut is rotated and placed tightly on the bolt to hold these materials together. Washers are also used along with nuts and bolts to enhance the holding power. Locking washers are applied to avoid loosening of nuts. Nut and bolts are secure fasteners and provide materials with more load-bearing capacity. They are easily removable and available in a variety of sizes. But you need to drill the holes accurately using a drill machine to install them properly.

Staples:

Staples come in U-shape and are fired into one or more materials to hold them together or enable them to stay in a place. To install this type of fastener you need a gun loaded with spring or powered air staple gun. These fasteners can be installed and removed easily. They are often used for temporary fastening and they serve the purpose perfectly. It should be noted that they are loosened easily and don’t offer reliable load-bearing capacity. They can rip light materials as well, therefore, you need to be careful about the materials while choosing these fasteners. You can make use of these fasteners during a roofing project to hold down the roof tar paper temporarily.
