Nobody Warned Me About The Ugly 40's

Nobody warned me about the ugly 40s. Not my friends, magazines, or the endless stream of women on social media who somehow seem to wake up looking effortlessly radiant at 47. Nobody explained that there might be a period where I would look in the mirror and question, what exactly is happening here?

The makeup that used to work no longer works.

The clothes that used to flatter somehow no longer do.

The hairstyle I’ve had forever suddenly feels wrong.

The weight doesn’t come off the way it used to.

The energy isn’t the same.

Even my face feels unfamiliar some days. But I don’t necessarily feel old. I just don’t feel like myself. At least not the version of myself I’ve known for decades.

The Middle School Feeling Nobody Talks About

The ugly 40s remind me a little bit of middle school. You’re not who you used to be. You’re not who you’re going to become. You’re stuck somewhere in between.

Your body is changing, your confidence feels unpredictable, everything feels awkward, and everyone else appears to have figured it out except you. That’s what makes this stage so frustrating.

You look around and see women who seem completely comfortable in their skin. Women who have mastered their style look polished and confident, and seem to know exactly who they are. What you don’t see is the transition they probably went through to get there.

The Part That Has Nothing To Do With Beauty

I’ve started to realize that the ugly 40s aren't really about appearance. They’re about identity. For years, many of us knew exactly how to exist in our bodies.

We knew how to get dressed, lose weight, style our hair, and feel attractive. We knew who we were. Then one day those formulas stop working, and suddenly we have to learn ourselves all over again.

That’s terrifying. Not because we’re becoming less beautiful, but because we’re becoming unfamiliar.

The Grief Nobody Talks About

There’s also a quiet grief attached to this stage of life. Not because we necessarily want to be 25 again. Most women I know would never trade their current wisdom for their younger selves.

But there can still be grief. Grief for the body that changed effortlessly, the skin that bounced back overnight, the certainty, and for the version of yourself that felt easier to understand. That grief is normal. It doesn’t make you vain. It makes you human.

What gives me hope are the women who are on the other side of this phase. The women in their mid-40s, late 40s, and beyond who seem grounded. Not perfect, but grounded.

They’re not trying to be 28 or desperately chasing youth. They’re not apologizing for aging. They simply understand themselves.

They know what works and what doesn’t. They have stopped fighting reality. And because of that, they often appear more beautiful, secure, and at peace than ever.

Not because they look younger, but because they look comfortable. And confidence is attractive at every age.

Maybe It’s Not The Ugly 40s

Maybe we’ve been calling it the wrong thing. Maybe it’s not the ugly 40s. Maybe it’s the becoming 40s.

The transition 40s.

The figuring-it-out 40s.

The learning-yourself-again 40s.

Whatever we call it, I suspect many women are going through it. Quietly wondering why nothing feels quite right. Quietly questioning whether everyone else has some secret they missed.

Well, no matter what social media says, they don’t. They’re just in the middle of becoming. And becoming has always been a messy process, at any age. Even when something beautiful is waiting on the other side.
