Unclean water
Unclean water
The most immediate and devastating impact of unclean water is on health. Waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, typhoid, and hepatitis A are rampant in areas with contaminated water supplies. According to WHO, diarrheal diseases alone, often linked to unsafe water and poor sanitation, kill approximately 485,000 people annually. Children under five are particularly vulnerable, with around 297,000 children dying each year from diarrhea caused by unsafe water and inadequate sanitation.
Contaminated water often contains harmful pathogens and pollutants, including bacteria, viruses, and chemicals. Long-term exposure to contaminated water can lead to chronic health issues such as kidney damage, liver disease, and various forms of cancer. The ingestion of water containing heavy metals like lead and arsenic poses serious health risks, including neurological damage and developmental delays in children.
