What Is Chroma Key?

Chroma key is one of the most important and widely used techniques in video production, cinema, and visual effects (VFX). This technique allows users to remove the background of an image or video and replace it with another image or footage. Chroma key is heavily used in sci-fi movies, news reports, video games, and educational content.

The Concept of Key and Keying

Chroma key is the process of removing a specific color from an image (usually green or blue) and replacing it with another image. This specific color is called the key color, or simply the key. The chroma key process isolates this color from the image, treats it as transparent, and then inserts a new image in that area.

So, in chroma keying, a specific color is removed and turned into transparency so that another image or video can be placed in its place. Simply put, the key color becomes invisible, allowing a different background to be inserted (e.g., placing a person over a desired background).

Alpha Transparency

Chroma keying is a process in which a target color is converted into alpha transparency.

In digital graphics, images are usually made up of four channels:

• R: Red 🔴
• G: Green 🟢
• B: Blue 🔵
• A: Alpha ← this is the one you need to really understand!

✅ Alpha Channel: The alpha channel defines how transparent or opaque each pixel is. Depending on the software and numeric system being used:

• Alpha = 0 → fully transparent (invisible)
• Alpha = 255 (or 1, depending on the scale) → fully opaque (visible)
• Values in between → semi-transparent

When a region in the image (e.g., a green background) is replaced with an alpha value of zero (completely transparent), that area becomes invisible. Because that area is now transparent, we can place another image or video behind it, allowing it to show through. In this way, the main subject remains in front, and the original background is replaced with desired content. This process is the foundation of chroma keying in filmmaking and content production for creating special effects and combining visuals.

Two Key Concepts: Foreground and Background

Foreground

The foreground refers to the parts of the image that are in front of the scene and draw the viewer’s attention. This typically includes the main subject(s) like a person, animal, or object meant to be highlighted. In chroma keying, the foreground is the subject placed in front of the green or blue screen that we want to isolate from the background.

Background

The background is the part of the image that lies further behind, used to set the environment, create depth, or provide visual context. It may include skies, buildings, walls, or any other complementary elements that shouldn’t distract from the main subject. In chroma keying, the background is the green or blue color that gets removed and replaced with another image.

So:

• Background = green screen (which gets removed)
• Foreground = subject (e.g., presenter)

In the final compositing stage:

• Foreground = the chroma key output (subject only, transparent background)
• Background = new image or video placed behind the subject (e.g., a city street or stadium)

In video editing software, two layers are used to change the background:

• Top layer: chroma key result (just the subject, rest is transparent)
• Bottom layer: new background image replacing the green screen

Keying

Keying is the general term for the process where a specific color or feature in an image is removed or made transparent using special tools or effects. The purpose is to separate the subject from the background so it can be composited over a different background. Essentially, keying removes the background and creates what’s known as an alpha matte. This process is central to the chroma key technique and is widely used in film production, visual effects, and video content creation.

Keying means removing the background color (like green or blue). The result is an image or video in which the background areas are transparent. This output is called a key.

So, simply:

A key is the image or video where the background color has been removed, leaving only the main subject, ready to be placed over any new background.

• Keying = Removing a specific color from an image
• Key = The resulting image, ready for background replacement

Alpha Matte

A keyer is a tool or effect in video editing software used to generate an alpha matte. The alpha matte is a grayscale image that defines the transparency and opacity of each part of the image through the alpha channel.

An alpha matte is essentially a single-channel (grayscale) image that stores pixel transparency information.

• White areas → completely opaque (fully visible)
• Black areas → completely transparent (invisible)
• Gray areas → partially transparent or semi-opaque

In the figure below , the alpha image is shown alongside the original image. The background (which could be anything, not just a green screen) is removed and represented as black in the alpha matte. The subject or foreground is shown in white.

So, to summarize:

• The keyer is one of the main tools in the chroma keying process.
• Its job is to analyze the image and generate an alpha matte.
• The alpha matte is a grayscale image representing the transparency of each pixel.
• White areas → visible parts (e.g., presenter, car, objects)
• Black areas → removed parts (e.g., green screen or any keyed color)
