A deep dive into Boy Meets World

In this series of blog posts, I will explore the popular TV Series from the 90s- Boy Meets World. It will be an analysis of the show as a masterful attempt at the deconstruction of popular family sitcom tropes, a commentary on them, and a great display of adding more humanity and meaning to the tropes that we have grown very fond of. What makes this show worth assessing is that it takes a step not in the subversion of expectations in order to deconstruct the cliches, but providing the audience with exactly what they desire, but changing the path it takes for the better and exploring the reality, impact, and effort of it beyond just the punchline. The format of the show is fairly simple, each episode takes a common sitcom trope, which is delved into with the help of the issues and dilemmas in the life of our protagonist, Cory Matthews, an Eleven-year-old kid living in the suburbs. The show broadens its horizons by drawing parallels in the problems that Cory faces in his childhood with his educational content, the trials of adult life, and worldwide issues. Something that the show brings to light, that you don't get to see often, is that all these struggles are the same, it is all just people making tough choices and require a similar set of skills and consideration to tackle… that it’s all connected. The show is very careful with the beliefs and ideologies of its various characters and makes a point to put forth personality even in the seemingly irrelevant scenes. In this series, I will discuss each episode of at least the first season, the trope it deconstructs, the philosophies it entails, and how it takes everything you’ve already seen and builds an experience you’ve never had before. But the best thing that the show does is that at the end of each episode, it leaves you with the feeling of giddiness, joy, wholesomeness, and the rare satisfaction of witnessing something important, something you’d love to share with someone.
