The Long Way Home

Sometimes the best discoveries happen because you missed your turn.

Today, I took a slightly longer route home from the grocery store. No grand reason. No destination in mind other than picking up a few things and heading back home.

Then I stopped at a red light.

Across the street was a mural I had somehow never noticed before.

Huge blooms stretched across the side of an old building. Butterflies floated between deep shades of purple and pink. In the center, a woman stood peacefully with her eyes closed, as if she had found a moment of stillness in the middle of the city.

The strange part wasn’t the mural.

It was everything surrounding it.

The building’s windows were boarded up. Other storefronts on the street had clearly been forgotten. Years had passed without anyone investing much into that block.

And yet…someone had decided it was still worth painting.

I couldn’t stop thinking about that during the drive home.

Maybe that’s Memphis.

People often ask what it’s like to live here.

I never quite know how to answer.

If you’ve only watched the news, you’ve seen one version.

If you’ve only visited Beale Street for a weekend, you’ve seen another.

Neither one is wrong.

Neither one is complete.

Memphis has a way of holding contradictions without asking anyone’s permission.

You’ll find incredible music born from unimaginable hardship.

You’ll meet people who have every reason to become bitter but somehow remain the first to help a stranger.

You’ll drive past abandoned buildings only to discover breathtaking artwork that reminds you beauty never really left — it was just waiting for someone to notice.

There’s just something about Memphis that breaks your heart and gives you a reason to smile.

All within the same block.

The older I get, the more I realize that’s true of people, too.

We are all walking around carrying stories no one else can see.

Some of us have boarded-up windows.

Some of us have flowers blooming across walls people assumed were beyond saving.

Most of us have both.

Maybe that’s why I’ve always loved this city, even when it’s frustrated me.

It refuses to fit neatly into a headline.

It refuses to become only its worst moments.

Its beauty isn’t polished.

It’s resilient.

It grows through cracks in the sidewalk.

It appears in conversations with strangers.

It lives in neighborhood restaurants, corner bars, musicians on a Tuesday night, neighbors looking out for each other, and murals that unexpectedly stop you at a red light.

Sometimes I think Memphis doesn’t ask you to ignore its flaws.

It asks you to see all of it.

The broken places.

The beautiful places.

And then decide if you can love both.

Today, all it took was taking the long way home to remember why I do.
