America Has No Plazas: Why We Don’t Know Each Other Anymore

In every great city around the world, there’s a plaza.

Rome has them. Barcelona has them. Oaxaca, Marrakesh, Paris, Istanbul — they all have plazas. Open-air gathering places. Town squares. Courtyards. Spaces where people meet, talk, eat, protest, fall in love, grow old.

America doesn’t.

We replaced them with parking lots.

Instead of plazas, we built private backyards. Instead of town squares, we have malls. Instead of gathering, we isolate.

And now we wonder why no one knows each other. Why we’re so divided. So angry. So lonely. We don’t see each other — not in public, not on purpose, not often.

Our urban design erased our social contract.

When people share a plaza, they become part of something. They see the mother with the stroller. The old man feeding pigeons. The musician playing guitar. The kids chasing each other around a fountain.

They begin to recognize each other. Then trust each other. Then care.

That’s not just cute. It’s the foundation of a functioning society.

Because people who know each other — really know each other — don’t shoot each other. They don’t dehumanize each other. They don’t vote to destroy each other’s lives.

Plazas aren’t amenities. They’re infrastructure for empathy.

And here’s the thing America still doesn’t understand: You can’t replace physical interaction. Zoom won’t do it. Twitter won’t do it. Texts won’t do it. Only real human presence creates social trust. Only shared physical space builds culture, connection, and civic pride.

America has spent the last 75 years building for cars, not for people. We erased the plaza in favor of the drive-thru. We chose traffic over community.

We now live in a country that doesn’t just lack public space — it lacks shared space of any kind. Everything is either private, commercial, or surveillance-based. There are no neutral zones. No slow zones. No places to just be.

Want to fix political division? Build plazas. Want to reduce violence? Build plazas. Want to fight loneliness, racism, and civic apathy? Build plazas.

Because you can’t hate someone you sit next to on a bench every day.

We need to make this a national agenda: — Build plazas into every neighborhood — Reclaim parking lots and underutilized streets — Design cities for proximity, presence, and pleasure

Let’s give Americans places to remember they’re still part of the same story.
