When Writing Turns Reckless: Respecting Truth, Not Just Stirring the Pot

There’s nothing more frustrating than stumbling across an article that makes bold, disrespectful claims without doing the work. I’m talking about pieces that use sacred topics — especially ones close to the Christian faith — as clickbait, tossing around shocking headlines and “what if” scenarios dressed up as research. But when you read between the lines, you realize: this isn’t truth-seeking. It’s attention-seeking.

As a Christian and a writer, I take issue with this. There’s a difference between asking hard questions and pushing dangerous assumptions. If you’re going to write about Mary, Jesus, or any foundational truth of the Christian faith, you’d better come correct — with proper study, historical integrity, and a heart that respects the subject, even if you don’t believe in it.

Too often, writers twist translation debates or vague historical references just to create controversy. They ignore centuries of theological study, firsthand accounts, and the lived faith of billions. Why? To get a reaction. To spark debate. But not everything sacred is up for distortion just because it makes a catchy headline.

My faith has saved my life — literally and spiritually. So when I see people casually rewriting the story of Mary or questioning the divinity of Jesus based on flimsy claims, I can’t help but wonder: Are you searching for truth, or just stirring the pot to go viral?

As writers, we have a responsibility — not only to craft words but to respect the weight they carry. Especially when writing about things that others hold holy.

So write boldly, yes. But write honestly. Don’t mistake controversy for courage, or opinion for truth.
