Create More With Less Room: “Why Boundaries Are a Creative’s Best Friend”

Creating Rules for Your Creativity

Boundaries give you more mental space to see things clearly

What do creative boundaries feel like???

Just like you need a temple to do the prayers, in the same way, you need a creative corner that needs to be free from noise and distractions. Your creative corner is your sacred place where you should not allow anyone but just yourself. If you could provide yourself with such a peaceful and scented environment and you made sure to work there consistently on a daily basis, no one could stop your creative juices from flowing naturally.

By ‘distraction-free space’, I mean there should be minimal visual clutter of things. Only those things that you need to use should be on display; the rest, everything, should be away from your sight. You could place the rest of everything in some closed storage. Your creative corner needs to be organised and clean; you can light a candle or an incense stick as well. You can put all those things on display that inspire you and remind you of your higher persona.

By ‘noise-free space’, I mean you should put your phone on ‘do not disturb’ mode or on silent mode. This is your flow time, and you cannot let your flow get disturbed by notifications and talks that are not necessary. Every conversation can be delayed until there is not any emergency. Well, I was so addicted to checking my phone, so I used a digital wellness app on my phone to turn off the apps I don’t need when I am in my creative zone. Leave no room for distractions and noise when you are in your creative corner; only then will you be able to create more. Your creative juices will start flowing naturally in such an environment without putting in much effort.

It’s like creating your own studio that reflects just peace and love.

It is important to protect your peace in the morning when you just wake up and before going to sleep; there are two very precious times to reprogramme your subconscious mind. If you could learn to make the best of these times, you would become unstoppable. I am a morning person; I can wake up early in the morning to do the hard tasks, and this time my creativity is at its peak. I utilise my morning time to rewire my brain, to give it direction and to set the intention for the whole day.

The most important kind of boundary is to protect yourself from people who don’t have any good thing to say about your work. Ask yourself, are they just here to demotivate you? If yes, then learn to distance yourself from them and stop responding to their comments; that is the biggest winback you could have. Sometimes your work is in progress and needs refinement, and then if you let some people barge in to be a critic, it could be very destructive for you to continue to work on that project.

Anything that acts like a hindrance to your creative flow, try to create boundaries around those things or people. Limiting entrance to such hindrances in your creative zone can create a lot of room for creativity.
