Topic: A Journey to Bethel III Texts: Genesis 28:12–15; Exodus 3:1–6

Today, we continue our series on prayer. Having already established that Bethel is no longer confined to a physical location and that our pursuit must not focus on the things of Bethel but on the God of Bethel, we now turn our attention to another profound truth that shapes divine encounters.

When God appeared to Jacob at Bethel, He introduced Himself as “the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac” (Genesis 28:13). Likewise, when God encountered Moses at the burning bush, He declared Himself to be “the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob” (Exodus 3:6).

This repetition does not mean that God merely enjoyed referencing the patriarchs. Rather, it reveals that both encounters were grounded in an already established covenant, a covenant God initiated with Abraham and reaffirmed through Isaac and Jacob. The basis of these divine visitations was not the merit of Jacob or Moses, but God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises.

God appeared to Jacob because of what He had established with Abraham and Isaac. In the same way, God encountered Moses because of what He had promised and sworn to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Exodus 2:24).

David later became another man who entered into a covenant with God. This is why the Messiah would come through his lineage, according to God’s promise that David’s throne would be established forever (2 Samuel 7:12–16). This covenant with David was not separate from, but a continuation of, the Abrahamic covenant, ultimately fulfilled in Christ.

It is crucial to understand that when God appeared to Moses, the encounter was not happening because Moses had qualified himself. Likewise, Jacob’s encounter at Bethel was not initiated by Jacob’s spiritual insight. Both encounters were acts of covenant faithfulness.

This understanding makes it clear why Jacob’s response, placing conditions on God by saying, “If God will be with me and give me bread to eat and clothing to wear…” (Genesis 28:20), reveals a lack of awareness and understanding.

This was the same God who had just promised him a land, innumerable descendants, and that through his seed, the whole world would be blessed (Genesis 28:14). Yet Jacob’s focus narrowed to food and clothing. He was standing on the promise, but his request reflected a limited understanding of what God had already committed Himself to do.

Many believers still make this same mistake today. We often assume that God’s work begins with us, and we become preoccupied with securing material provisions rather than aligning with God’s eternal purposes. While God can establish a personal covenant relationship with you, it will never exist outside of what He promised to Abraham, reaffirmed through David, and fully established in Christ (Galatians 3:16).

Beloved, God is a covenant-keeping God. He does not seek us because we have impressed Him, but because Christ has already secured an everlasting covenant through His blood (Hebrews 13:20). By virtue of being in Christ and belonging to the family of God, we stand on promises that do not fail.

Therefore, God will surely reveal Himself to you when you seek Him, not because of your qualifications or achievements, but because you are being drawn into a covenant that began before you and is greater than you. Like Moses, God seeks to align you not only with the blessings of His promises, but also with the responsibilities that the covenant relationship demands.

So when you come before God in prayer, come boldly, but also humbly, ready to learn His ways. Most importantly, come assuredly, knowing that you are approaching a covenant-keeping God who remains faithful to His word from generation to generation.
