Leaders Who Build Abbott

From 1888, when it was founded by Dr. Wallace Calvin Abbott, an orthopedist and a 1925 graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to today, where it is one of the world’s largest medical product companies with over 100,000 employees, and a valuation of over $200B, the following are the CEOs of Abbott over time.

Wallace Calvin Abbott (1888–1921)

Dr. Abbott was a 30-year-old physician who founded the company as a small pharma facility that provided a uniform dose of medication. He laid the foundation for what would become a global healthcare company. During his tenure, Abbott’s annual revenue grew from $2,000 to $1.5M.

Alfred Burdick (1921–1933)

Dr. Burdick expanded the company’s product portfolio and R&D capabilities. By the end of his tenure, Abbott’s revenue had reached $4M. He also acquired medical product maker Swan-Myers, where its presidents, Rolly Cain and his son, George Cain, both became future Abbott CEOs.

Simeon DeWitt Clough (1933–1945)

Clough, who joined Abbot in 1904, became its 3rd CEO. Clough was a visionary businessman and a top-level executive. He grew the revenue tenfold to nearly $40 million and increased the number of employees from 1,000 to almost 5,000.

Raymond Horn (1947–1958)

Rolly Cain, who had served as CEO for only 11 months, was succeeded by Raymond Horn, a sales executive who had supercharged Abbott’s sales a decade earlier. During his tenure, Abbott significantly expanded its medical device and pharma products, growing its revenue to over $100M.

George Cain (1958–1972)

George Cain transformed Abbott into a truly global organization. He continued to expand Abbott’s product lines and international presence, growing its revenue to nearly $500M. He also increased Abbott’s R&D spending, bringing in 100 new scientists and university partnerships. His work at Abbott has been highlighted in Jim Collins’ #1 best-selling book, “Good to Great.”

Edward Ledder (1972–1979)

Edward, who joined Abbott in 1939 as an hourly employee, became its CEO three decades later. He guided Abbott through significant challenges, including a massive product recall. He established the diagnostics division and grew Abbott’s revenue to $1.5B.

Robert Schoellhorn (1979–1989)

Led Abbott through a period of diversification and international growth. During his tenure, Abbott expanded into nutrition products, growing its revenue to $5B.

Duane Burnham (1989–1998)

Focused on streamlining operations and improving profitability. During his tenure, Abbott introduced new medical devices and diagnostics, growing its revenue to over $10B.

Miles White (1998–2020)

One of the longest-serving CEOs in Abbott’s history, White significantly reshaped the company through strategic acquisitions, including Knoll (which brought in Humira), St. Jude Medical, and Alere, as well as significant divestitures, such as Hospira and AbbVie. He is recognized as one of the most outstanding MedTech CEOs of all time.

Robert Ford (2020-present)

Ford, who joined Abbott in 1996, took the helm in 2020. He led Abbott through the COVID pandemic, overseeing the development and distribution of critical testing technologies. He continued to expand Abbott’s offerings, making Abbott the world’s most valuable medical device company, with over $40B in revenue.
