Sit Back, Old Men. Time for a Cuppa.

Here. Sit down. There’s tea on.

Take the biscuit. You look tired. You’ve been white-knuckling the controls for fifty years and frankly it shows. The world is on fire, the institutions are hollowed out, the trust is gone, and you are still in the room, still certain, still absolutely sure that more of you is the solution.

It isn’t. It never was. You just made sure no one could say so.

Not ideology. Not principle. Not even worldview, though you have dressed it up as all three.

It is selfishness. The selfishness of men who got a taste of power young, spent decades making sure no one could take it from them, and have now confused their grip with their identity. Let go of the lever and you become ordinary. Can’t have that. Better to run the whole thing into the ground than to become just another old man watching the news.

So here we are.

You built the feedback loops that tell you what you want to hear. You kept the advisors who know better in line through the oldest trick available: make honesty career-limiting. You watched institutions bend around you rather than constrain you and called it leadership. You made every room you entered smaller, every decision more centralised, every successor just threatening enough to manage, never quite capable enough to replace you.

This is not what governing looks like. It is what hoarding looks like.

You did not inherit the zero-sum worldview. You chose it. You kept it because it is enormously useful to men who want to hold power indefinitely. If the world is blocs and borders, if trade is war by other means, if every relationship is a dominance negotiation, then the man with the most leverage wins. And you made very sure that man was you.

The flat world was always a threat to that logic. Friedman’s metaphor, but more than a metaphor. A different reality entirely. Borders as friction, not as identity. Collaboration as the default, not the exception. The network running on instincts that made everything you had spent your career building look like a sandcastle at low tide.

So you tried to manage it. Contain it. Make it legible to your institutions.

The Mentor wrote “The Conscience of a Hacker” in 1986. Sitting in a cell. He called it that on purpose. A conscience. Addressed directly at you, the men who could not hear it. He told you we existed without skin colour, without nationality, without religious bias. Not as aspiration. As description. As the actual operating reality of the thing you were trying to police.

“This is our world now.”

You read it as a threat. It was a statement of fact.

You have had nearly forty years to sit with that and you chose, every single time, to tighten the grip instead.

Do you genuinely believe we will?

The cold logic. The ledger. The idea that someone always has to lose, that difference is danger, that the point of power is to keep it. We watched you run that operating system our entire lives. We watched what it produced.

We are not carrying it on.

Not out of idealism. Not out of what you have spent decades dismissing as naivety about how the world works. That condescension. That knowing smile. The patient explanation from the men in the room that we would understand one day, when we had seen enough, when we had been roughed up by reality enough to finally get it.

Here is the thing. The world doesn’t work. It is broken. And you broke it. So forgive us if we decline the tutorial from the people who ran it into the ground and are now explaining, with great confidence, that this is just how things are.

Out of incompatibility. We grew up in the flat world. We are native to the network. We were built for a different set of problems and we know it. We are comfortable with uncertainty. We can update. We do not need to perform certainty to feel safe in a room.

You are governing with instruments calibrated for a world that no longer exists, and the cost of that is being paid by people who had no vote in the matter.

That is not a mismatch. That is a choice. Made repeatedly, in full awareness, by men who knew exactly what they were doing.

This is not an argument. You stopped engaging with arguments a long time ago.

What you replaced them with was volume. You found that saying something louder, with more confidence, through more controlled channels, to more sympathetic audiences, worked just as well. Better, actually. Arguments require you to be right. Volume just requires you to be louder.

And to be completely fair: every side did this. The ideological tribe does not matter. Left, right, centre, it is the same mechanism running on different fuel. You all abandoned the argument at roughly the same time and replaced it with performance. Competing performances, increasingly disconnected from anything real, until the credibility drained out of the whole system and left nothing behind but noise dressed as conviction.

There is no credibility left. Not yours. Not theirs. You burned it collectively and now you stand in the wreckage still performing, still certain, still pointing at the other side as if anyone is keeping score.

Nobody is keeping score. Nobody believes any of you.

It is a notification.

We do not need your permission. We do not need your blessing, your endorsement, or your graceful transition. We do not need you to finally understand what you got wrong. We are not waiting for the moment you become self-aware.

We are already running the systems that matter. We built them around you. We will keep building.

You can rail against it. You can appoint more men who look like you and think like you and protect what you built. You can spend whatever is left of your tenure making it harder, noisier, more hostile. Some of you are clearly very committed to exactly that.

It will not work. The electron does not care. The switch does not negotiate.

So.

Sit back.

Have your cuppa.

There’s a biscuit on the saucer. Enjoy it.

We have this.
