Just 2.5 hours from Tokyo, the city of Shimoda on the Izu Peninsula doesn’t usually pop up in the top search for places to visit in Japan. But that hasn’t stopped visitors from finding Shimoda on their own.

Those who do discover it often fall in love with its beautiful beaches, relaxed lifestyle, and welcoming community. For remote workers and adventurous travelers seeking something beyond the usual tourist trail, Shimoda offers an authentic and inspiring place to live, work, and explore.

Tadaima Shimoda Glocal Program

The Tadaima Shimoda “Glocal” Program (connecting local citizens with global visitors) has made visiting and staying in Shimoda even more attractive.

In Japanese, “tadaima” means “I’m home” — it’s a phrase people say when they return home. The program embraces that spirit, welcoming visitors to make Shimoda their home away from home while they live, work, and connect with the local community.

Tadaima Shimoda is an umbrella organization that hosts a wide range of activities throughout the year, all focused on its mission of co-creating the future of local Japan. Thanks to Shimoda’s mild climate, visitors can enjoy the city throughout the entire year.

The Tadaima 2026–3rd Edition features a Co-Living Program from October 25 — November 22 and the Tadaima Main Week in early November.

The Main Week is the highlight of the program, offering a dynamic schedule of keynote talks, workshops, unconference sessions, pitch events, and unique local experiences. It’s the perfect opportunity for newcomers to experience the Tadaima community firsthand. Check the website for dates & details https://tadaima-japan.jp/events/tadaima-2026.

Anyone is welcome to participate in the programs. Whether you’re a digital nomad, remote worker, entrepreneur, creative professional, or simply interested in global-local collaboration, you’ll find opportunities to connect and learn. There are no restrictions based on nationality or profession. And if you don’t speak Japanese, no problem — sessions are conducted in English.

Elena Tsukada — A Hands-On Leader

Elena Tsukada, Co-Organizer and Founder of ELENTO LLC, Board Member of the Japan Digital Nomad Association, and Co-Founder of Digital Nomads Tokyo and Tadaima Shimoda, provides the energy behind many of the programs.

I had the pleasure of spending several days with her and was struck by her constant energy and enthusiasm. Whether networking with new visitors, planning upcoming events, or relaxing at the weekly community dinner, she was always finding ways to connect with people and create new ideas.

Supporting Elena is a dedicated team of staff and volunteers whose hard work helps ensure that Tadaima Shimoda program runs seamlessly and provides a welcoming experience for participants from around the world.

I participated in the June 2026 Nomad Experience as a facilitator. This one-month program gives participants the opportunity to explore a variety of professions through hands-on workshops led by experienced instructors. Through practical experience, participants can make more informed decisions about their future careers.

The participants are tech-savvy and AI-native, creating an environment where learning goes both ways. Facilitators and participants exchange ideas, techniques, and practical tips drawn from their own experiences.

Workshops are held in the mornings and afternoons are free for working on assignments, collaborating with fellow participants, or catching up on personal remote work. The next sessions are already planned: https://nomadnia.net/nomadexp.

If you’re looking to pivot from your current career, take a gap year, or simply experience life in Japan, the Tadaima Shimoda program has something for you. Shimoda provides a beautiful setting to slow down, recharge, and connect with like-minded people while you explore your next steps.

The Tadaima Shimoda website provides everything you need to get started: https://tadaima-japan.jp. Who knows? Before long, you may find yourself saying “tadaima” — “I’m home.”
