Second-hand ceramic treasure for you to guess_ Own & photo by Oiseau Distrait
I was once working on Hong Kong Island near Hollywood Road. And it was once a busy street crowded with tourists, many many years ago. What is it famous for? Antique!
Genuine pieces like jade & gem, Ming dynasty furniture, paintings in master piece, etc. But the real treasures are vintage items hidden in second-hand stores.
Discontinued black plastic records; special edition stamps, coins & banknotes; mini sculptures,… anything has or hasn’t its value except in the eyes of the explorer.
I’m not an expert in any of the above, but I always search for fun. During a lunch break one day, I found this treasure which I spent some time to figure out what it was, but failed. I need to know what it was, or otherwise I couldn’t concentrate on my work in the afternoon. So I asked the owner… Voilà!
A Bird head decor ceramic Thimble!
Do you think it works? I tried to put my index finger inside. Oops! Either mine is too thick or those ladies in the past are too thin, ha ha! My ring finger did fit but very very uncomfortable indeed. Guess what, I bought it cos ‘Birdy’ always brings me joy, especially this one in a special design of vivid yellow.
HK$5 is the price to the owner; for me, it is not for sale.
While I wrote this article, I remember there was a film photo which I rescan years ago & kept in my file. Here it is, a vintage shop on Hollywood Road in 1986. I forget whether I bought my treasure here, but for sure it was in my good old days.
