Apparently, That’s my Job

Therapist, emotional monitor …..like it or not I’m here for you.

I actually never really thought about the jobs we take on that are not the obvious ones. The ones beyond the “remote control finder”, the “where’s my_____” finder, the vacation planner, the dinner planner …. The list goes on and on. But this question helped me think about the other roles I play, what jobs do I take on, do I even want this job and are they appreciated?!

The first job that comes to mind is the Therapist. Not in the, I’ll fix it for you kind of therapist or even the tell me everything, spill the tea, kind of therapist, but rather the reminder that talking about feelings and emotions are important, necessary even. See, it’s easy to share events, updates, dinner and shows and work gossip without ever getting to know someone, without ever talking about how they feel….. how they really are, and are they checking in about how they feel.

So what does this job entail? It means asking and being curious. How does it feel when you cook and clean for your grown son and he doesn’t do anything to help you? I know you don’t mind, but how does it feel? Ahh, so maybe you do mind? So, you’re not upset that your boyfriend doesn’t remember your anniversary? Ah, okay…… oh wait, it does hurt? So many conversations wind up deeper, talking and sharing not just reporting news but honoring the emotions and feelings that we are all working through . These are things we don’t like to admit, to talk about, but the ones that deepen our relationships and help us get to know ourselves. Plus it’s makes spending time together so much more meaningful. Those friendships where I offer my services but am politely declined….. they are boring, superficial, not friendships at all really .

But is this a job I want anymore? And how did I get here? And now that I realize it, is it worth it? I’m not so sure. Maybe taking on the task of the emotional connector is not for me. Maybe the pay is deeper connections but at what cost?

Maybe I’ll take a leave of absence and see if this is a job I miss, if it’s missed by others , would my time be better spent working on something else?

I’ll let you know ……
