It’s a compound your body makes from Leucine, one of the most important amino acids for muscle growth and recovery.

and aging.

Once again, HMB stands for beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate.

It’s a compound your body naturally produces when it metabolizes Leucine.

Which is a branched-chain amino acid found in protein-rich foods like meat, dairy, eggs, and whey.

Your body only converts a small percentage of leucine into HMB. Roughly 5% or less.

That means even if you eat plenty of protein, your natural HMB production remains low.

HMB is also found in foods like grapefruit, catfish , and alfalfa.

But again, the amounts are tiny.

To reach the 3 grams per day commonly used in research, you’d need a ridiculous amount of food.

But if you’re really serious about size and strength, right before a workout is best.

Honestly, I’ve never heard of anyone having any problems with HMB.

In healthy adults, 3 grams per day appears well tolerated.

Some people may experience mild digestive issues such as:

  • stomach discomfort
  • bloating

These side effects appear uncommon and are usually mild.

Long-term human data is still somewhat limited.

So, to be extra safe, people with medical conditions or those taking medications should speak with a healthcare professional before supplementing.

HMB: Not Hype But Not Essential
