Her mother is not a part of her past. She is a part of her.
It is who her maa was. And she carries it like the most precious gem her mother gifted her.
Timeless.
This is not a sad story in the usual sense. It’s a story about inheritance, not of property, but of character. The grief is present, but it never overshadows the admiration. That’s what makes it different.
A real story. But all those things that are kept hidden due to social reasons, or because of the wish not to talk about them, or maybe because there isn’t enough courage to revisit those flashbacks…somehow find their way onto pages. Into writings that remain timeless.
So, this is that story, without the person's identity.
The woman who lives her life treating people so kindly, as if every meeting could be the last.
I have never seen her involved in any kind of drama, whether with colleagues or over the smallest matters. She is always the calmest person in the room & the strongest when it comes to ignoring negativity. She takes a stand for others, yet remains one of the most humble people I have ever met. She forgives people, as she never wants to carry the regret of not trying to save a bond. At the same time, she cuts off toxic people as effortlessly as peeling vegetables. A strange balance, completely intolerant of toxicity, yet endlessly patient with the people she chooses to keep. That’s probably why she has only three or four close friends. Her intuition is so strong that she doesn’t even have to choose; the real ones stay automatically.
I always wondered what her story was. What made her stand out? Until I finally came to know it. And then I realized…what is more painful? Having the chance to tell your painful story openly, or carrying it through life as if nothing ever happened?
Similar things happen to many people. When someone loses a parent at a very young age, they are built differently. No amount of ordinary grief compares to it. They don’t just survive a trauma, they grow up carrying it, like holding a box of puzzles that will always have one missing piece. Nobody can ever replace it.
That is why two kinds of children often grow from the same loss. One becomes mature, emotionally intelligent, and wise. The other, unfortunately, grows up angry, distant, or unkind because life was never kind to them.
So what made this woman different?
Yes, she lost her mother at a very young age too. But what became even more heartbreaking over time was that her mother’s memories were replaced. The family she grew up in no longer spoke about her mother. She slowly disappeared from conversations and from the house itself... Someone who was once the pillar of the house became just another word ~ "past."
Others may have forgotten her because she was somebody's wife, somebody's daughter-in-law, somebody's aunt, somebody's relative. But to her, she was her world. She was her mother.
Her maa is not a part of her past. She is a part of her mother.
Every bit of simplicity & kindness she carries comes from the woman her mother was.
The courage to stand up for herself came much later. She grew up collecting lessons about how the world works & realizing that nobody can afford to be blindly kind forever. yet her kindness stayed. The way she loves stayed. Because that was the love she witnessed, even if only for a very short time.
The world around her knows that she loved her father the most, but nobody knows why there is no story about her mother. The truth is, she always loved her mother the most. She was a mama’s girl. She just never got the chance to say it openly.
When her friends share Mother’s Day posts or little moments with their mothers, she stays silent. Even when someone says they have lost their mother, she cannot simply say, "Yes, I understand." Not because she doesn’t but because sometimes society doesn’t allow every truth to be spoken. Some replacements come with the unspoken condition that the story behind them must remain hidden.
And so, she carries that one secret gracefully. She moves forward in life, yet there will always be a quiet space where she misses her mother…in every festival, every achievement, every sorrow. She cannot even eat some of the foods her mother loved, yet she secretly treasures the songs and actors her mother used to adore.
When life takes away her very first love, her mother, at such a young age, how does she not grow up believing that everything is temporary?Maybe that is why she faces every difficulty with a positive mindset & never gives up.
She treats people as if they deserve all the happiness in the world. Yet she chooses to stay alone & rarely gets attached.
The same little girl who could never fall asleep until her mother came to bed after finishing the kitchen...
Now willingly lives alone.
She knows the value of precious things. A real girl’s girl without ever posting about feminism. At the same time, she understands men’s emotions too, because she grew up watching the silent struggles of her father.
She became the person who ended a generation's trauma instead of passing it forward.
And she remained the simplest girl in the room. Maybe because simplicity was one thing about her mother that society could never replace.
Her mother belonged to a time before filters, before social media, before stories & reels. She never got to know different shades of foundation, Instagram, or what her daughter would become. She never got to know her daughter’s graduation subject, her friends, her favourite songs, or her art.
If only she could have known that she was never her daughter's greatest trauma.
She became the reason behind every good quality her daughter carries.
Whenever someone compliments her kindness, her patience, or the way she understands people, it all belongs to her maa who taught those things simply by existing.
Those were the days before smartphones, when memories lived in film negatives & albums instead of endless galleries. Maybe that is why some stories survive only through the people who continue living them.
The rest of her mother lives quietly, in her behaviour, in her thinking, in her art.
Her mother is not her weakness. She is her strength.
Maybe if she had lived, everything would have been different. But life taught this little girl to understand people, pain, & emotions from so many perspectives that today others rely on her, Without ever knowing why she is the way she is. Because the one thing she missed the most in life was a safe place to express her emotions, to speak freely, to be heard, & never be judged.
So she became that safe place for her people.
She listens. She never judges.
She lets people be themselves around her.
She welcomes emotions with quiet grace because she knows how many years of tears it took behind closed doors to become the calmest person in the room.
Not because she is emotionless.
But because anyone who has tasted a storm that intense at such a young age eventually learns how to stand peacefully through the smaller ones.
And perhaps that is the greatest inheritance her mother left behind.
Not only memories.
But a way of being.
Again, it’s not just who she is. It is who her maa was. And she carries it like the most precious gem her mother gifted her.
