UK's rich are fleeing as austerity and brexit gut the working class

Since 2022, over 10,000 millionaires have left Britain, while 4.3 million children now live in poverty and public debt has hit 100% of GDP.

Let's start with a scene. It's a Tuesday morning in Mayfair, and the estate agents are busier than they've been in years. But they're not showing flats to young couples or tech founders. They're handling liquidation sales for multimillion-pound townhouses owned by hedge fund managers who've already bought their place in Monaco, Dubai, or Switzerland. The British rich are running. And they're taking the country's future with them.

According to the latest Henley Global Citizens Report, the UK lost over 10,000 millionaires between 2022 and 2025 — more than any other country in the world except China. Not Russia. Not India. Britain. The country that's supposedly "open for business" under a Labour government that promised stability and growth. Instead, we've got capital flight, a collapsing pound, and the highest tax burden in seventy years.

The great escape of the investor class

Wall Street Mav put it bluntly on X this week: "The people who start business and invest in the economy are fleeing at a rate unseen anywhere else in the western world." He's not wrong. The UK's net outflow of high-net-worth individuals in 2024 alone was 4,200 people. That's not a blip. That's a haemorrhage.

And the government's response? More tax hikes on ordinary workers. The Office for Budget Responsibility confirmed that by 2028, the UK's tax-to-GDP ratio will hit 37.7% — the highest since Clement Attlee's post-war government. But here's the thing: Attlee used that money to build the NHS and council housing. Labour today is using it to service debt that's hit £2.7 trillion, or 100% of GDP. The interest payments alone — £110 billion this year — are more than we spend on defence.

Austerity's real victims

Philip Davies, tweeting from exile, summed it up: "Austerity - punished ordinary people not millionaires. Brexit - cost £bn but admired by Putin. Conservatives - the party responsible."

Let's talk about those numbers. The Institute for Fiscal Studies calculated that austerity between 2010 and 2019 cut public spending by £37 billion a year. That meant 20,000 fewer police officers, 5,000 fewer nurses in training, and local councils losing 60% of their central government funding. The result? 4.3 million children now live in poverty — up from 3.6 million in 2010. Food bank usage went from 41,000 emergency parcels in 2010 to over 3 million in 2023.

And Brexit? The Office for Budget Responsibility says it's reduced UK productivity by 4% relative to staying in the EU. That's £40 billion a year in lost tax revenue — money that could have funded schools, hospitals, and housing. Instead, we got Boris Johnson's "oven-ready deal" and Liz Truss's mini-budget that crashed the pound and spiked mortgage rates for millions.

The Labour government's central contradiction

James Melville called it: "Britain on brink of a full-blown fiscal crisis. Chief executives see a low-growth, high-regulation economy." The Labour leadership keeps talking about "stability" and "fiscal responsibility" — code for sticking to Conservative spending plans and refusing to tax wealth. But you can't stabilise a sinking ship by rearranging the deck chairs.

Rachel Reeves's first budget in October 2024 raised employer National Insurance by 1.2 percentage points and froze income tax thresholds, dragging more people into higher rates. Sound familiar? It's the same austerity-by-stealth the Tories used for a decade. The Resolution Foundation found that the poorest third of households will lose 3% of their disposable income by 2028, while the richest third lose just 0.5%. That's not redistribution. That's class warfare from above.

Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported this month that UK business investment is 18% below where it was in 2016. The economy grew just 0.1% in the first quarter of 2026. We're flatlining.

Milei fantasies and the welfare state lie

Leo Kearse tweeted that the only positive is "a Milei-style reform of govt bloat." Let's be clear: Argentina's Javier Milei has slashed public spending, cut fuel subsidies, and devalued the peso — pushing poverty from 40% to 57% in six months. That's not reform. That's a chainsaw to the poor.

The narrative that "voters entirely dependent on the welfare state" are propping up Labour is a lie. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation found that 60% of people on Universal Credit are in work. They're not "scroungers." They're care workers, retail assistants, delivery drivers — people whose wages haven't kept up with inflation. Real wages are still 3% below their 2008 peak. That's sixteen years of lost earnings.

What's actually needed

Tony Blair's back, telling Labour it needs a "fundamental reset." Great. The man who invaded Iraq, deregulated the City, and introduced tuition fees is here to save us. Meanwhile, his protégé Keir Starmer is courting business leaders who are already halfway out the door.

The answer isn't more austerity or more tax cuts for the rich. It's a wealth tax on the top 1% — which the London School of Economics calculated could raise £24 billion a year. It's renationalising energy and rail to stop billions flowing to private shareholders. It's building 150,000 council homes a year, which would create jobs and cut housing benefit costs. It's scrapping the two-child benefit cap, which the Child Poverty Action Group says has pushed 250,000 children into poverty.

But that would mean confronting the people who fund the Conservative party. The people leaving for Dubai. The people who own the newspapers that tell us there's no money left.

There is money. It's just in the wrong hands.
