Issue 59: The foretell Project, Slidecrafting with Quarto, Python for AI

A weekly curated update on data science and engineering topics and resources.

In case you missed this week — **Vibe Coding — Lessons Learned and a [new course about SQL AI agents](https://ramikrispin.substack.com/p/new-course-build-sql-ai-agent-from).**

This week’s agenda:

  • Open Source of the Week — The foretell project
  • New learning resources — Python for AI, introduction to AgentKit, logistic regression visually explained, Python for loops
  • Book of the week — Slidecrafting by Emil Hvitfeldt

The newsletter is also available on Substack and LinkedIn.

Open Source of the Week

This week’s focus is on the foretell project by Srihari Jaganathan. The foretell is an R library that provides a set of tools and functions to project customer retention. It is based on Fader and Hardie et. al. Probability Mixture Models.

Project repo: **https://github.com/sriharitn/foretell**

The library includes the following features:

  • Reparameterized models for faster and more stable estimation
  • One-and-done models
  • Cure models
  • Prediction intervals with both:– Process uncertainty– Estimation uncertainty
  • Standard error estimates for parameters (Delta method)
  • Enhanced plotting function
  • Added PMF for sBG and BdW models

You can find more details on Srihari Jaganathan’s post.

New Learning Resources

Here are some new learning resources that I came across this week.

Python for AI

The following Python course, by Dave Ebbelaar, provides an introduction to Python for beginners with emphasis on AI applications development.

Introduction to AgentKit

This tutorial, by Alejandro AO, provides an introduction to the new OpenAI tool, AgentKit. AgentKit is a set of tools that work with and deploy agents in production.

Logistic Regression Visually Explained

The following short video provides a visual explanation of logistic regression and how it is different from linear regression.

Python for Loops Explained

This short tutorial by Visually Explained introduces how to write Python for loops to repeat tasks.

Book of the Week

Are you using Quarto? You should check the Slidecrafting by Emil Hvitfeldt, a new book that focuses on the art of putting together slides that are functional and aesthetically pleasing with Quarto presentations.

The book includes the following three sections:

  • Theming — the visual appearance of slides, covering topics such as colors, fonts, size, CSS, etc.
  • Content — focuses on different methods to modify and customize the slides’ elements and layout
  • Interactivity — covers different methods to create interactive slides

The book, thanks to the author, is open and available online for free:
