Veteran forecasters sounded the alarm – then the floodwaters arrived

By July 8, 2025, the Texas Hill Country flash flood killed at least 104 people, including many children from a nearby camp and their counselors.

This is the kind of event that makes it hard to be patient with people who say they want nothing to do with politics.

This wasn’t just weather. It was policy gone deadly. And it’s not an isolated incident.

Two federal agencies work together to predict and monitor weather events. They are:

• The National Weather Service (NWS).
• The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

When fully staffed, with enough forecasters, radar techs, and emergency coordinators, they do a good job working together.

Then Elon Musk came along with his chainsaw.

On February 27, the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) fired 586 probationary forecasters across NOAA and the NWS. It also pushed out hundreds more through forced resignations and quiet terminations. Nearly 1,000 staffers left – some shoved, others burned out and gone.

That left critical gaps. The San Antonio office lacked a Warning Coordination Meteorologist – the person who connects forecasts to communities. In some offices, overnight shifts now have one person where they used to have three.

These aren’t abstract numbers on a ledger. They’re holes in the defense – right where the flood hit.

Sen. Schumer has called for a Senate investigation into whether these staffing holes delayed warnings. And though the administration denies any responsibility, the facts speak louder.

Meteorologists Had Forewarned: “We’re Flying Blind”

In early 2025, after the DOGE cuts, forecasters blew the whistle:

NBC 6 Miami meteorologist John Morales warned that weather balloon launches had dropped 20%, while forecasting offices were 20 – 40% understaffed, calling the situation “dangerously inadequate.”

Business Insider flagged that cutting 600 NOAA staff, about 5% of its workforce, would severely imperil forecasting and public safety.

The Guardian reported that DOGE-era cuts forced 8 of 122 NWS offices to suspend 24/7 operations and delayed balloon launches.

These weren’t vague cautions – they were specific alarms.

It’s about to get worse.

Project 2025’s Weather Service Takeover: “Shrink It to a Data Farm”

Project 2025, the right-wing plan shaping the current administration’s agenda, calls for dramatic changes to NOAA and the National Weather Service – shifts already underway.

The plan describes NOAA as “a colossal operation … one of the main drivers of the climate‑change alarm industry.”

Someone needs to wake people up to the realities of climate change and who better to do so than the weather scientists?

NWS and NOAA are among the few federal agencies still openly reporting on the scientific impacts of climate change, including stronger hurricanes, megafires, and record-breaking heat waves. Trump’s allies don’t like that narrative.

That’s why the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” follows the Project 2025 playbook to the letter.

• It strips $150 million from programs designed to improve weather forecasting.
• It slashes another $50 million in grants that support climate and severe weather research.

That’s $200 million cut from the systems that track storms, issue warnings, and help communities prepare for disasters. These cuts haven’t gone into effect yet. But they show exactly where this administration is headed: ignoring and denying climate change, fewer forecasters, fewer alerts, slower warnings – and more preventable deaths.

Texas Felt the Consequences in Real Time

Flood watches hit Thursday night. But by early Friday, rainfall doubled the forecast; rivers surged over 26 ft in 45 minutes. With fewer balloons and staff, forecast models failed dramatically, leaving emergency planners blind to the real danger. Camp Mystic’s staff only realized the scale too late, costing the lives of at least 27 campers and counselors.

Spin Doesn’t Save Lives

Officials claim “watches went out 12 hours ahead, warnings 3 hours before peak.” Fair – but irrelevant when the forecast was wildly wrong:

• Rainfall was underpredicted

• Models ran on incomplete data

• Few staff meant delayed updates

• That delay cost lives

Of course, you are responsible if the system stumbles despite heroic efforts.

Rebuild Now or Watch It Happen Again

This wasn’t an accident. It was textbook failure. Meteorologists warned that gutted structures would collapse under stress.

And they did.

Speaker of the House MAGA Mike Johnson says, “All we know to do now is pray.”

He’s wrong. Pray all you want.

But we must also

• Rehire meteorologists

• Restore balloon, satellite, and overnight systems

• Treat forecasting as a public safety imperative.

Because until we fund the team accordingly, it’ll happen again, and more will die. No spin, no excuses.

I live in fire country – Nevada, in the Great Basin Desert – where wildfires aren’t a rare inconvenience, they’re an existential threat. And Elon Musk’s DOGE didn’t just gut weather forecasting; they slashed wildfire preparedness too.

Budget cuts have crippled the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, and NOAA wildfire teams, reducing federal incident‑management crews by 15 – 20% just as fire season heats up, thanks in part to DOGE’s across‑the‑board reductions and spending freezes.

Here in the desert, that means fewer wildfire meteorologists, thinner suppression teams, and slower detection when flames spread.
