Russian literature did not begin with the psychological novels that later made it famous. Long before Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, or Chekhov, its foundation was being formed through religious texts, historical chronicles, and oral storytelling.
These early forms mattered because they preserved more than language. They preserved belief, collective memory, cultural identity, and moral imagination.
