Designing Voice Editor for Gnani.ai.

Gnani.ai(“Gnani”) is an emerging technology-focused enterprise software product provider in vertical AI building, optimized Speech Recognition engine and NLP/NLU modules for Various industries such as Banking, Retail, Insurance, Legal, Travel, etc.

Gnani.ai took me as a UI/UX design Intern to work on a few AI products that they were to develop. Feb’ 19, I became a UX designer here at Gnani.ai. I got an opportunity to work on designing a new Product — Gnani Voice Text Editor.

Product Description

Gnani Voice Text Editor is a product where you can create documents using your voice, get automated transcripts for uploaded media (audio/video), also you can efficiently edit those transcripts using Indic keyboards or even your voice and seamlessly share it across different platforms.

Goal

In India, around 50 crore people speak Hindi and only 0.06% of websites or apps have content in Hindi. Same holds true for other Indic languages in India just with different statistics. It is important to build the products for India to empower the Indic language user. An increase in Indic languages in India will cause an immediate impact on India’s businesses and economy.

The process followed to design this new Product:

  1. Gather Detailed Requirements
  2. Research
  3. Do Sketches, Decide User Flows
  4. Create Wireframes
  5. Visual Implementation of Design

Key Note :

Collect Review and Feedback after each step in the process, First to know that you are working with the right thought process and that your idea and clients idea of the product is in sync and secondly, to avoid redundancy in every step.

Gather Detailed Requirements

I received the content for Product — features, requirements in design and functionalities that have to be in a product from the Product Head Pavan Ravishankar at Gnani.ai.

The first task was to go through all these requirements and classify them according to release versions of the product. Secondly, to prioritize them according to the importance and their usage in the product from a user’s perspective.

Research

User Research

To start with what problems users are facing right now with current input options and what should we prioritize to solve in our product apart from also giving voice as an option to type we took a survey of 40 people in different careers.

  • 61.5% people use Indic keyboards, and 88.5% of them find it difficult to type in local language
  • 57.7 % of people say they need transcriptions and also mention the purpose of transcriptions

The only purpose of the survey was to understand if our understanding of user pain points is right and what is more important to solve in our product.

Competitive Research

Next came the competitive research to understand the same products in the Industry about — Features, Uses, and Language they are providing plus the User Base they are targeting.

A snapshot from the Competitive Research of the Product

It is surprising how you understand your product more when you research into some other product already existing in the market, you know where to innovate, what to ignore and were to give more importance. What our competitors offer us separately, we are offering in our product, with an amazing voice transcription accuracy for different languages like Kannada, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil & Gujarati.

It was just not the user survey, we talked to some people face to face and they are not even aware that transcription software is there online and even if they are available, the problem is transcription accuracy.

Sketches & Wireframes

With the research part, I got into the sketching part and this one was the final chosen idea of design by my founders and team.

Visual Implementation of Design

This is the design I came up with finally. I won’t declare it the final design as lots of modifications will come in with my increased understanding of the product. (Also because I am never satisfied with the design and keep improvising).

As it is developed it will be out for testing and what I hope is to collect more mistakes in this design to improve it more. For me as a designer, this process will never end and I strive to make it better each day.
