Bipartisan Mandate Extension: US Congress Grants Afghanistan War Commission Additional Time for Final Report

The United States Congress has formally authorized a one-year extension for the Afghanistan War Commission, allowing the independent legislative body additional operational runway to complete its exhaustive evaluation of the 20-year conflict. Under the updated schedule, the commission’s definitive assessment will be submitted to Congress and the public in August 2027.

Rigorous Analysis of America’s Longest War

Created to examine decisions preceding the 2001 intervention through the final withdrawal in 2021, the commission serves as the primary mechanism for institutional accountability. The co-chairs noted that the additional timeframe will allow researchers and commissioners to complete critical document reviews, conduct further high-level interviews, and synthesize findings across military, diplomatic, and intelligence domains.
