I Lost $800 in My First Month of Poker. Here’s Every Mistake I Made.
Looking back, it was predictable. I walked into online poker knowing nothing, lost $800 in a month, and almost quit.
Here’s exactly what went wrong:

I played too many hands. I was at 42% VPIP — playing nearly half of all hands. The correct number for a beginner is around 18–20%. Every extra hand I played was a spot where I was likely losing money.
I had no concept of position. I called raises with suited connectors from under the gun. I tried to bluff from out of position. I had no idea why position mattered and it cost me constantly.
I chased every draw. Flush draw on the flop? Call. Turn didn’t complete it? Call again. River blank? Okay maybe I should fold… but the pot is so big. I was consistently getting terrible pot odds on my draws.
I tilted after every bad beat. Someone two-outered me on the river? I’d immediately play the next hand recklessly trying to “get it back.” Every bad beat compound into worse decisions.
What changed everything: I started using PPPoker Assistant — a Telegram bot that gives real-time fold/call/raise recommendations. Not because it plays for me. Because it showed me, in real time, just how wrong my decisions were.
Seeing the bot say “fold” in spots I was calling was humbling and educational. Over weeks, I started understanding why.
Winrate today: +8bb/100 over my last 30,000 hands.
