Breaking the Silent Exodus: Why Chatra’s Children Leave School After Class 10

In a review meeting of the Education Department in Chatra, a hard to believe data point came up that could not be ignored. It was observed that 87% of the students were transitioning from Class 8 to Class 9, but this transition rate comes to 33% in the transition from Class 10 to Class 11.

Initially, it seemed like a data error. There was a flaw in the UDISE (students’ record portal) system. It considers students migrating to other districts as dropouts in the previous district dashboard. But even after considering this, the remaining number was too large to dismiss.

So the question changed from “Is the data wrong?” to “Why are children really leaving school?”

Diving Deeper Into the Reality

The challenges unfolded after a few conversations with teachers, parents, and students and were not visible on the dashboards. They were quite simple to understand but very complex to solve.

For the boys, the pull was the allurement of quick money. Chatra is a mining-prevalent and forest-dominated region; illegal mining activities and opium cultivation offer a handsome amount of money. For a teenager who has always lived in scarcity, this shortcut way to earn was enough to outweigh the invisible and distant promise of education.

For girls, the barrier was the unavailability of facilities. Higher secondary schools are far from their villages, and no reliable public transport is available to cover the distance. Parents cannot afford private transport, nor are they very interested in investing in girls’ education.

Apart from the above reasons, it was also found that many students were enrolled in the schools just because of the free mid-day meals provided by the government.

What emerged from the findings was a complex challenge. It is like a tangled thread with knots of poverty, tough geography, lack of transport and basic facilities.

Why This Matters Now?

If we see this issue in numbers and data, it may look ordinary. But when a student drops out of school, along with education they also loose an opportunity and a platform that could secure them a better future.

In places like Chatra, schools does not merely serve as educational institutions. They are the safegurads for the children. Without them, these young minds can be easily lured into exploitative work due to their poor economic conditions.

For girls, it becomes even more serious. Dropping out of school prevents them from accessing independence and better future choices, pushing them into the existing vicious cycle of inequality.

If this trend continues, Chatra risks losing a strong future workforce and a developed society as a whole. It is imperative to understand that these children are not lacking ambition. They just need the facilities and supportive environment that can be provided through the combined efforts of the administration and the community.

Addressing these issues requires both empathy and practical solutions, for every child who remains in school represents the promise of a better future.

The Way Forward: Potential Interventions

• Fix Data Gaps: Clean UDISE data to accurately identify dropouts and target interventions.
• Improve Girls’ Access: Ensure safe local transport (e-rickshaws via SHGs) and expand residential schooling for remote girls.
• Re-engage Boys: Pair awareness with skills, coaching, and livelihood-linked training to offset illegal income incentives.
• Extend Incentives: Continue mid-day meals or similar support beyond Class 8 to improve retention.
• Drive Convergence: Align efforts of administration, schools, communities, and civil society for sustained impact.
