Language App Review Wednesday #44: Snu Lei Hangul

Developed by HyongA, Snu Lei Hangul focuses on learning the Hangul alphabet. It’s broken down into seven compact modules to learn the vowels and consonants. There’s even an “Introduction to Hangeul” section that gives an introduction about Hangeul as well as pronunciation rules for specific vowels and/or consonants.

Strengths

The audio and the number steps on how to write each vowel and/or consonant + vowel combination are what I consider to be the main strengths. The two test options are an overall neutral impression for me. It’s good to have them, but it’s not exactly something that catches my interest when looking over the beginner friendly potential of the app for those that want to learn Hangeul alphabet. Managed to see the test options have some vocabulary words. What took me by surprise is the app doesn’t default to putting romanized letters for the alphabet. It’s a neat bonus when that happens.

Weakness

Honestly, there wasn’t really a room for any weaknesses that I could find in the app. Even when I wondered why certain sounds sounded indistinguishable, the tips feature for each scenario already informs about that anyways. So…yeah, couldn’t find anything that felt weak when seeing the beginner friendliness of the app for myself.

Effectiveness in Learning/Reviewing

This would be where the two test options helps with effectiveness. They do an overall good job with help to memorize the alphabet. That said, I think adding a writing test component would increase the effectiveness when getting tested on vowels and consonants. Just a suggestion. The app still performs fine as is.

Ability to Stay Motivated

Regarding motivation, that’s where the writing practice paired with listening to the audio comes in. The breakdown into seven compact sections makes it feel as though I am completing through each one at a good pace, which keeps the motivation going.

Offline (Optional)

Did a quick offline check. It seems to work offline, which a nice bonus.

Overall Score: 5/5

It feels a bit nostalgic to stumble upon a Korean App focusing primarily on vowels and consonants. I probably will just make use of the app for a good week or two. Or, just pair it with the other Korean language apps I use and have reviewed. I also feel lucky I haven’t run out of apps to try and review, despite a growing amount of “AI Language Apps” appearing.
