The universality of the saying should tell you something. This isn’t a cultural problem. It’s a math problem.

And when you actually run the numbers, the outcome is almost mechanical. A $100 million fortune, left to compound and divide across a typical family tree, fragments into modest wealth within four generations. No market crash required. No fraud, no scandal, no catastrophic mismanagement. Just arithmetic.
