What she forgot. What I remember.

A story about distance, silence, and losing someone who once felt like home.

“What are we now?”

Every time I think about this question, my brain quietly answers:

We’re a little more distant than strangers on the road. Strangers at least exchange glances.

We don’t even do that anymore.

When did all this happen?

Not overnight.

Not because of one big fight.

Just… slowly. Quietly. Without us even realizing it, time pulled us apart.

Neither of us tried to fix it.

Neither of us is to blame.

The Happy Past

There were days when we laughed at each other’s lame jokes and found joy in the smallest things.

We binge-watched K-dramas and dating shows, ruthlessly judging the characters like we were experts.

We talked for hours every single day and never ran out of words.

You’d sneak your phone into the hostel just to take silly pictures with me.

We always had each other’s backs.

It felt like we were a whole – us against the world.

I really believed we’d never drift.

The Gap

Then you moved abroad. And suddenly, you weren’t the person I knew anymore.

I don’t know why you made me wait hours for a reply… while posting stories online.

I didn’t know how to feel – should I be happy that you’re living your life, or sad that I was waiting hopelessly?

I don’t know why you started liking the very people who once pushed you away.

I don’t know why you missed them more than me.

I don’t know why you began hiding things from me.

Why I only heard the sad parts of your life, never the happy ones.

I don’t know why it hurt so much that you forgot my birthday – enough to make me cry myself to sleep that night.

I don’t know why I had to learn about your life through your stories instead of your words.

Why I remembered your birthday in both our time zones… but you barely remembered mine.

Why I felt like you took me for granted.

Why all I heard was “My life’s always miserable,” but never “I went on a trip,” or “I got back with my ex.”

I don’t know if it was you.

Or me.

Or distance.

Or time zones.

But I do know this:

You don’t know I felt all these things.

The Aftermath

We both know this isn’t what we wanted.

We both pretended everything was fine.

We tried.

And tried.

And tried.

But now… we’re tired.

This is my version of the story.

I’m sure yours would show my mistakes too.

But the point is: the effort stopped mattering.

I tried to hold on.

Tried to keep it normal.

Tried to make it feel like “us” again.

But in the end, we just hurt each other – even if we didn’t mean to.

That label – “Best Friend” – has faded.

Our contact names came a long way:

From wild inside jokes to just plain names.

Like nothing was ever special.

It took me years to realise:

Nothing in life is promised forever.

We meet.

We grow close.

We fight.

And we grow apart.

The worst part?

When the one person you used to talk to about everything… is the person you can’t talk to anymore.

You don’t know who to rant to.

Who to laugh with.

Who to cry with.

And in that silence, reality hits hard:

I had become a parasite.

No individuality.

No self-definition.

Just emotionally dependent on one person.

The Closure

They say, “Don’t run away from your problems.”

But sometimes… running gives you space to breathe.

Better late than never.

One day, you realise:

You are worthy.

You are enough.

You are precious.

No matter who stays or leaves – you still deserve to live your life fully.

Maybe this is what adulting feels like.

Learning that you’re responsible for your own healing.

Not waiting for someone to validate your emotions.

You start exploring things you love.

You discover what brings you joy.

And in doing that, you slowly find pieces of yourself you didn’t know you’d lost.

Losing you broke me.

But finding myself…

That’s what’s finally healing me.

To sum it up:

Losing you taught me how to find myself.

And maybe that’s what this was all for – not to end in anger, but to begin in growth.

You were a chapter. But I’m still the story.
