How I Built User Personas for a Real Estate Platform -UX Challenge Day 4
Introduction: The UX Challenge Continues
Welcome back to my 16-day UX Challenge! Today marks Day 4, and the task is all about user research — a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of UX design. The goal? To craft real, research-driven user personas for a young online real estate platform.
Imagine this: You’re the first UX hire in a growing company that helps users find homes, explore neighborhoods, and contact agents. But here’s the catch — the company has never conducted user research before. Without real insights, how can we design an experience that truly meets users’ needs?
That’s where user research comes in. Today, I’ll walk you through the process of identifying real user behaviors, conducting research, and creating detailed personas that can drive meaningful design decisions.
The Research Process: Understanding Real Estate Users
Why Personas Matter in UX
Personas aren’t just fictional characters — they are research-backed profiles that represent real users. When done right, they:
- Highlight key user pain points
- Help designers and stakeholders make informed decisions
- Ensure products are built with user needs in mind
Meet the Users: Research-Driven Personas
Based on my findings, I developed two detailed personas, each representing a key segment of the platform’s user base.

UX Opportunities for Improvement:
- Verified Listings with AI-Powered Fraud Detection — To eliminate fake properties
- AI Chatbots for Quick Responses — To automate agent responses for instant replies
- Live Virtual Tours & Video Walkthroughs — So renters can explore properties remotely
- Cost Breakdown Calculator — To clearly show rent, deposit, brokerage, maintenance costs upfront
- Smart Matchmaking Algorithm — Suggesting pre-verified listings based on his preferences

UX Opportunities for Improvement:
- AI-Powered Home Loan Calculator — Showing best mortgage rates, EMI breakdowns, and long-term affordability
- Neighborhood Insights Dashboard — Comparing safety, schools, public transport, and cost of living
- Trust Score for Properties & Builders — Using AI to analyze builder history, project delays, and buyer reviews\
- Step-by-Step Home Buying Guide — Simplifying legal paperwork, registration, tax benefits, and hidden costs
- Personalized Property Alerts — AI-driven recommendations based on her budget, lifestyle, and preferences
Key UX Takeaways: Turning Insights into Action
This research highlighted major UX gaps in current real estate platforms. Here’s how we can bridge them:

Final Thoughts: Why Research-Driven Personas Matter
This challenge reaffirmed an essential UX lesson: Designing without real user insights is like sailing without a compass.
These personas provide a data-driven foundation for better design decisions. Instead of guessing, we now understand real user frustrations and expectations — allowing us to create experiences that truly solve problems.
What do you think? Have you ever used personas in a UX project? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
