Standing at the threshold

What It Really Takes to Step Into the Light of Leadership.

You started your career at the firm unsure if it was your calling. But as you integrated into the system, you didn’t just understand the work — you fell in love with it. It aligned with your natural strengths. You began to dream of the top.

You have invested years of hard work and sacrificed much of your life to this path. You’ve created an identity so intertwined with the firm that you can no longer separate yourself from its DNA, values, and culture. You’ve been consistent. You’ve grown.

Yet, despite meeting every metric, building the business, and earning client trust, you find yourself standing at the threshold — waiting. You are ready, but the firm doesn’t seem to see it yet.

Reflection

You want the role, but you cannot look desperate. To stay on track for the top, you must realize that the final leap isn’t just the outcome of your performance; it is the result of alliances, trust, and strategic relationships.

  • Stop Asking for Permission. Don’t ask, “What do I have to do to get a sponsorship?” Firms don’t offer partnerships to those who don’t understand how the game is played.
  • Narrate Your Value. Instead of asking, tell them. Detail the business you’ve built, the clients you’ve won, and the teams you’ve fostered. Make the case that you haven’t just met expectations — you have earned the seat.
  • Identify Your Sponsors. Don’t wait for a mentor to find you. Explicitly state who should be your sponsor and why it makes strategic sense for the firm.
  • Master Mutual Exchange. If you allow people to use your strengths without ensuring a positive, healthy return for your own career, you don’t understand business. You cannot be a resource that people use for free.
  • Pivot from Technical to Political. If technical expertise is your only strength, you will always be treated as a “utility.” To reach the top, your people skills — and your political acumen — must be equal or greater than your technical skills.
  • Project Command. True power (or “leadership quality”) is having full control over yourself before you attempt to control people or situations.

Practice, Not Perfection

No one is perfect, and few possess every single one of these traits naturally. However, at this level, your “acting game” matters. You must portray the qualities of the leader you wish to become. The better you can fit the frame, the sooner the firm will see the full picture.
