Perrault wrote Bluebeard in 1697. Maybe the story was teaching us that if you obey, everything will be fine. At least that’s what I thought when I was a child.
I look at this fairytale differently now. One of my readings I tried to fit into a short film.
When I showed it to a man I know, he said that abuse and gaslighting are just hype, that the problem doesn’t really exist. But it’s exactly this denial that makes you think.
Bluebeard loves control and measured coexistence. He is generous and kind — within the borders he allows himself. To him, you are a victim. And you always have to say this out loud, first of all to yourself.
