Scene: We are on planet Hill. Julia is the narrator.

The Garden of Evie

I visit Evie in her Asian inspired garden home. Evie has a thing going on … an arrangement with some selected advanced students. I don’t sense into it, because I want the surprise as much as everyone. When I enter, I see a small stage had sprung up in one end of her garden. Some spectators have already picked their preferred spot. I find my way to the back of the stage. Here are others. Phoebe whom I know as Agnes at the academy in London, the young man, Yang, Lila whom I know as Sarah on Earth, and Tiandi, a man whom I also know on Earth as Théo. He is close to Sarah there. Oh, and Sarah was my first sitter on Earth. The last person is Jolene. She goes by the name Huan Ni in China. We are dressed up for the occasion and enjoy it.

In Evie’s and my life on Earth, we moved from England to China after completing our academy time in London. Now we have set sail to create a school in Guangzhou. The angels here on High Hill know this because we share things. Being open motivates the students to be open too. They also learn from our ongoing live reports on the planet they train to live on.

Evie steps up on the scene while the lights turn on. “On Earth, I had felt an urge toward the Asian … way, and I’ve mirrored that here.” She shows around with her hands before continuing.

“Because of your advancement, I have promised you a reward. I won’t take you to Earth, but I’ll do the next best thing. Bring you a slice of the Earthly magic here, and present you for the best Earth walkers at hand.”

Now her face shifts to show feigned despair. “After much manipulation and arm-twisting, I’ve persuaded some I thought were my friends to play and sing a song with me … for you. On Earth the song is known through the man, David Bowie, and has the title China Girl. You know, I’ve become a China girl.”

She turns her back to the audience, addressing us in the rear. “Let’s move them!”

This is our cue to approach the scene. And I sense it expanses. While we come forward, Evie turns to the audients again, making her presentation. “You know the performers. They’re all your most beloved professors, me included.”

Tiandi starts on the drums with a pulse. Jolene joins in on the electric base. Yang sings the lead vocal. Evie plays the keyboards. I assist her and play the alto saxophone. Lila plays the lead guitar, and Phoebe the rhythm guitar. We all add back vocals.

The lyrics were originally improvised by Iggy Pop at the microphone while Bowie wrote the music. The lyrics has many hints. Indeed, because it was ‘channelled’.

As the music takes on in intensity, a large audience appears around the students. It doesn’t take me long to recognise the stadium. It is in Hong Kong, and I see the letters in light many of the people waves up in the air: 邓紫棋 and GEM, Get Everyone Moving. There is a ‘hidden’ meaning in this: getting people moving in their lives, like in the message ‘those who have ears will hear’. I sense Gloria, which is the woman behind the stage name, smile. Evie has ‘borrowed’ the sensing of Gloria’s fifty thousand spectators. Hong Kong is Gloria’s hometown, so the large backup from fans isn’t surprising. She performs one of her own songs which is not part of our gig, but she brings us the sensing.

Because our angel audience has no filers, they are overwhelmed by the intensity of the Earth audience. Indeed, they get high. As we complete the song, Gorgia ‘waves’ goodbye and the Earth audience fades away. We, the performers get down from the stage and mingle with the angels.

The student, Arthur bursts out: “I surely hadn’t expected that crazy stunt with the Earth magic from you, Evie. I’m deeply grateful for the share … and your own performance too.”

“Thanks, Arthur. Yes, we’re such a bunch of … magical professors.”

Jolene has a comment too: “There are many marvellous magical beings making a difference on Earth. I know you’re all in on that subject, studying them … the way they work.”

Kira, another student, shows us she has been studying: “Yes, they’re all doing it differently … their uniqueness show, we must find our own way too.”

Lyra won’t be inferior to Kira: “Yes, we’re taking many notes. It’s extremely interesting. I’m honoured to shake hands with Gloria.”

Arthur is surprised: “You actually did? Cool!”

Mina joins in: “I must admit, my focus was more on her than on the Earth stage. Sorry Evie.”

“She gave you something, and that’s great.”

Tellus has picked up how special the time is on Earth these years: “Some of you professors are humans in the same time as Gloria. I hope to be there too.”

Jolene smiles: “Look three degrees to your right, Tellus.”

Tellus shifts focus. “But that is … Edinburgh … Scotland? I’m already on Earth?”

We give him time to catch up. Then he continues: “That IS me … my name is Kun. But there is nothing special about this life.”

I use a secret laser pointer as he takes a closer look: “Julia! We’ve already met. You made a mess with your food. We talked about Hong Kong. Kun wants to go there.”

I touch him on the arm as I leave. “See you on Earth, but not in Hong Kong.”

Evie touches his other arm: “By the way, Kun means Earth. See you there.”

Tellus turns to Jolene: “Why didn’t I know I’m already living a human life on Earth?”

“You’ve hidden that from yourself, Tellus. Now it’s time to connect. See you there.”

Tellus raises his hands to the sky and looks up with a face in feign despair: “They have all conspired against me. Even myself!”

All get a good laugh. Tellus included.

A new arrival on Hill

Evie and I leave her garden home together. Just inside the entrance to the garden, we see a slender, barefooted woman with long black hair hanging loose, wearing a pale-yellow dress. I recognise her as being the two-years old Zahra from Morocco. “Hi, Zahra. I didn’t know you were here … too.”

She smiles: “I followed you here. You both left a flowery scent, wild rose and a jasmine-like one.”

Evie greets her too: “Welcome, then. What name do you use on Hill?”

“I use my Earth name. I Am me, anyway.”

“Just like Julia and I do … and others.”

I smile: “You’ve kept your scent from Morocco, apple and cinnamon.”

“Yes. Again, that’s me.”

I make another observation: “You’re very clear. Will you assist on High Hill?”

“I will. I do. I have an arrangement with Sarah … and Théo.”

She points in to the garden. “They’re here too. Lila and Tiandi.”

Now she tells what I already know: “Nazir and I will attend and teach at Fatima’s university in Fes. It’s all connected.”

Evie begins to small talk: “And you’ve picked your place on Hill?”

“Yes. A house like those on Santorini in the Mediterranean Sea. It’s made of volcanic rocks and finished with a lime-based whitewash. The outer woodwork, like doors, windows and shutters, is painted blue. The house also has a small tower with a domed roof. I have many neighbours, just like on Santorini.”

I remember Fes: “And in Fes: Houses close together and many neighbours. I’ve visited Santo City here on Hill. The climate is much like the one in Fes … hot, though you have the sea right next door.”

Evie has been both places: “It’s very peaceful in Santo City, and the light and sky are like Santorini.”

Zahra smiles: “Come and visit sometime. It’s just down the road.”

She smiles because everything is ‘just down the road’ on Hill. We keep High Hill and the surroundings appearing Earth-like, but one can still ‘move’ in an instance if one chooses to.

You, the reader doesn’t hear much from Eriqa, but she has a saying about how we write these … stories. She knows that making up stories with the mind is often a cumbersome task. Telling a story, already created, is much easier, but it requires an open channel. “Please, let us have your saying, dear.”

EQ: “Beyond the mind is where the stories live.”

Isn’t that a brilliant observation turned into poetry?

EQ: “The mind may step in front of the channel and block it from time to time. Still, the mind is useful for researching and doing the practical things about the text and publishing. It has its place in the team.”

Thank you for reading to the end.
