Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam: The People’s President and Missile Man of India

Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, affectionately known as the “Missile Man of India”, was a scientist, visionary, and the 11th President of India (2002–2007). His life story is one of extraordinary determination, humility, and service to the nation.

Born on October 15, 1931, in the coastal town of Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, into a modest Muslim family, Kalam’s early years were marked by hardship. Despite limited resources, his passion for learning never wavered. He supported his family by distributing newspapers as a young boy, all while excelling in school.

Kalam graduated in physics from St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli, and later studied aerospace engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT). He joined the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and later Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he played a pivotal role in India’s civilian space program and military missile development. Under his leadership, India successfully launched the Agni and Prithvi missiles, earning him the nickname “Missile Man.”

He was a key figure in India’s Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998, which marked India’s emergence as a nuclear power. Despite his scientific achievements, Kalam remained deeply rooted in simplicity, integrity, and spirituality.

In 2002, Dr. Kalam became the President of India with overwhelming public and political support. Though he held the highest constitutional office, he remained approachable and deeply connected with the youth, whom he inspired through his speeches and writings.

Even after his presidency, Kalam continued to teach, write, and travel, spreading his vision for a developed and self-reliant India. His books, especially “Wings of Fire,” “Ignited Minds,” and “India 2020,” continue to inspire generations.

Dr. Kalam passed away on July 27, 2015, doing what he loved most — interacting with students — at IIM Shillong. He left behind not only a legacy of scientific excellence but also a blueprint for ethical leadership and nation-building.

His life is a reminder that with perseverance, vision, and humility, one can rise from any background to become a beacon for millions.
