Japan Budget Travel Guide: Choosing Between Toyoko Inn, APA, and Dormy Inn
A deep dive into Japanese business hotels—and the one ultimate chain that wins our vote every single time.

Japanese business hotel chain, Toyoko Inn
When you travel around Japan, you quickly realise that you cannot rely solely on boutique hotels or traditional ryokans for the entirety of your itinerary. If you are moving from city to city, you will almost certainly find yourself checking into a Japanese business hotel at least a few times. They are the undisputed backbone of independent travel here—spotless, safe, and incredibly efficient.
While there are several major chains scattered across the country, our absolute favourite is Toyoko Inn.
The main reason we keep coming back? Their complimentary breakfast buffet. Unlike a basic continental toast-and-coffee setup, Toyoko Inn provides a high-quality local spread featuring fresh rice balls (onigiri), hot miso soup, and seasonal side dishes.
But here is a fun insider detail: not all Toyoko Inns are created equal. The menu and the overall quality of the breakfast actually vary quite a bit from branch to branch depending on the region. For slow travellers like us, comparing the unique regional breakfast quirks at different locations has become a genuinely fun part of the journey.
The Booking Shift: Why You Need to Move Fast
If you are planning a trip soon, there is one major trend you need to be aware of: over the last few years, booking a room has become noticeably harder.
Because these hotels offer such an incredible balance of privacy and affordability, rooms are filling up months in advance. The days of casually rocking up to a station and booking a room on the fly are rapidly disappearing.
With that high demand in mind, we are already organising our upcoming Tohoku region trip this September. Even though it is a few months away, we are locking in our hotel choices right now. The beauty of booking these chains early is that they almost always offer free cancellation up until the day before checkout. There is absolutely zero risk in securing your base camp early, but a massive risk if you leave it to the last minute.
Which Chain Wins? (Toyoko Inn vs. The Rest)
While Toyoko Inn holds a special place in our hearts, it isn't the only player in town. Depending on what kind of trip you are planning, three other massive business hotel chains might catch your eye:
- Dormy Inn: The premium choice with incredible free hot spring baths (onsen).
- APA Hotel: The ultra-modern, hyper-central minimalist option.
- Smile Hotel: The absolute budget champion for no-frills backpackers.
Each has its own unique perks, downsides, and distinct room layouts. I won't spoil all the finer details and comparison charts here, but if you want to know exactly how these chains stack up against each other—and how to navigate their hidden layouts—we’ve laid it all out for you.
