Saying Yes or No: What Is Best?

I am perplexed. Some people assert that we should learn the art of saying “no.” Others are equally sure we should say “yes” more often. Below is a sample:

“Very successful people say no to almost everything.” — Warren Buffett

“Yes is a tiny word that can do big things. Say it often.” — Eric Schmidt

The two camps are evenly matched.

So, who is right? The answer is: “both.”

Quotes are said in a particular context. They may seem absurd when viewed in isolation.

We should say “yes” or “no” depending on who we are and what we are doing in life.

A young person will learn more and progress in life by saying “yes” than “no.” Otherwise, they will be stuck in their comfort zones.

Leaders should prefer “no” to “yes” in most situations.

Self-care demands we say “no” often to avoid others from exploiting us. It helps set clear boundaries in relationships.

Saying “no” is tougher than saying “yes.” It requires both intelligence and wisdom. “No” is not a complete sentence as some people say. A little clarification, delivered kindly, will make “nos” more acceptable.

Both “yes” and “no” are important decisions. It is only a question of when to say them and how. Both require thought as Pythagoras said in the opening quote.
